Solar-Tie for Charging Cellphones

Iowa State University researchers have developed a solar-powered tie that can be used to charge cell phones.

Researchers at Iowa State University have developed a solar-powered tie that charges cell phones! This solar-tie is developed using a newly designed process called digital textile printing technologies that makes it possible for solar panels to be fitted into jackets and ties, writes CleanTechnica.

The tie has been designed with the intent of charging a 3V lithium ion battery, which is typically found in cell phones. The flexible solar panels are coated with a laminate that protects the solar material. When energized, the solar panels act similar to batteries. The digital textile printing technology used in solar-tie has also been tried with jackets and other clothing.

The solar-tie can be used to charge cell phones as well as carry them in the pocket at the back of the tie. It contains a cell-phone pocket and 3.6V plug-in. Read more.

However, as we know well, there is a downside to every innovation, in this case - it's difficult to knot the solar-powered tie.
