Internet regulator ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) that keeps track of Internet addresses; lost some of its own.

The world of tech won some and lost some last week. Here's a glimpse of some of the hits and misses.

Internet regulator ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) that keeps track of Internet addresses; lost some of its own. Domain names ICANN.com and IANA.com were hijacked; ICANN maintains the attack was brought under control in 20 minutes flat. Still!

Nothing compared to this faux passe! The infamous German baby was offered for as little as 1 Euro in a post on eBay that went like: "Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller". After which, the baby was removed from its parents custody only to be returned safely to them. It was all a joke - a game, the parents said.

Google, apple of Fortune Magazine's eye, may not be such a great place to work after all! According to the New York Times, the search major fumbled on a critical issue like day care for children of its employees. Two months ago, the company held secret focus groups with employees who have children in day care to gauge their reaction/s to a proposed 75 percent increase in prices of day care. The parents all but protested, doing everything they could to prevent Google from action-ing the plan. But in vain!

Meanwhile, Google Maps' controversial 'Street View' feature is charting new territory. With the 95th Tour de France having just kicked off on July 5th, to run through July 27th, Street View has released new imagery for fans to check out all 21 stages and 3,500kms of the 2008 race.

On the subject of territory, Iran's parliament is debating a new bill that might spell death penalty for those deemed as promoting corruption, prostitution, and apostasy on the Internet. The draft bill includes "establishing Web logs and sites promoting corruption, prostitution and apostasy" as a new addition to crimes punishable by death.

No Shanghai -- this! Guiyu, once a peaceful rice-growing village in Guangdong in southern China has now been proclaimed as "the world's electronic waste (e-waste) capital". For a measly $1.50, some 60,000 workers including children risk life and limb to scramble anything of value out of your old computers and laptops. The Environmental Graffiti reports.
