SSDs are more expensive to produce as compared to HDDs, but have lesser storage space
DRAMeXchange has released a report that says that the use of SSDs in netbooks is at record low and is further expected to fall in the next year. According to the report, 70 percent of the netbooks that retailed in Q1 2008 were SSD equipped, which further dipped to 66 percent in Q2, and 30 percent in the quarter gone by.
The research firm further forecasted that the last quarter of this year will see another plunge to 20 percent; it will further go down to a dismal 8 percent early next year.
Has the ongoing economic recession got something to do with the decline in netbooks with SSDs? It seems highly unlikely.
Here's an analysis of some facts on why SSDs aren't doing well:
- There's a preconceived notion that netbooks are meant to be pocket friendly, but the inclusion of SSDs tends to jack up the prices of netbooks, thus making the price on par with that of notebooks.
- SSDs are more expensive to produce compared to HDDs, but the storage space is lesser than that provided by HDDs.
- SSDs are known for lower power consumption than hard drives; though it's another matter when it comes to speed. Many netbook vendors use slow multi-layer cell (MLC) flash chips, which make SSDs slower than HDDs.
