Sify to Enter Thin Clients Market

Sify to Enter Thin Clients Market

Techtree News Staff, Jan 21, 2008 1517 hrs IST

Sify has ambitious plans to sell up to 30,000 thin client computers across nine Indian cities in the very first year of launch.

Chennai-based Sify Technologies is mulling a foray into the (as of now) 'nascent' thin client computing market in the country.

In this, the company seems to be following in the footsteps of another Chennai-based company, Novatium, which earlier announced its 'Novanet' thin client personal computer for home users.

A Livemint article quoted sources close to the development confirming that Sify was in talks with Microsoft to host the software major's operating system (OS) and productivity software on its central servers, allowing thin client customers to use these for a fee.

Typically, thin client computing involves a stripped-down version of computer connected to a central server hosting software and data, unlike traditional desktop computing which involves a full featured computer locally storing software and data on its central processing unit or CPU.

All said, Sify is seeking to enter a market which is currently in the nascent stage with just a few players, including California-based Wyse Technology and Chennai-based Novatium Solutions.

However, Sify has ambitious plans to sell up to 30,000 thin client computers across nine Indian cities in the very first year of launch. What's more, for home users, the thin clients will be sold at Rs 5,000 per box, along with a monthly fee for accessing software and data hosted on Sify's central servers.

And while demand for thin clients in India may not exactly be in favor of Sify or any other player in the space, IDC statistics reveal that in 2006, around 42,723 thin clients were sold in the country, followed by about 37,182 units in the first half of 2007.

Add to that Sify's pricing strategy, the thin client debut may turn out to be a successful venture for the company.

Because, a thin client computer typically costs around Rs 10,000 to Rs 14,000, which is exclusive of monitor and keyboard. As for Sify's existing competitors in the thin client space, the Indian unit of Wyse sells its thin client computer for Rs 25,00 that includes the keyboard, mouse, and software but excludes a monitor.

Whereas, Novatium sells its 'Novanet' PC for Rs 5,000, which includes the keyboard and monitor, with options to access operating systems running on Linux or the Microsoft Windows platform.
