Seventeen-year old George Hotz from New Jersey spent 500-odd hours (an entire summer) trying to free the iPhone from AT&T's clutches.

It took a nerdy teenager, a soldering iron, and a couple of energy drinks to 'unlock' Apple Computer's iconic iPhone.
Seventeen-year old George Hotz from New Jersey spent 500-odd hours (an entire summer) trying to free the iPhone from AT&T's clutches.
Hotz posted the hack on his blog Thursday. Which could lead to the mushrooming of an entire industry devoted only to buying of iPhones, unlocking them, and selling them to people who don't have or don't want the AT&T service.
However, the hack is complicated and requires skill with soldering and software. A wrong step here or there could render the iPhone useless.
Apple Computer and AT&T refused to comment on Hotz' exploit.
An earlier method deployed to make the iPhone work overseas involves copying information from the SIM chip or Subscriber Identity Module. This method does not require any soldering expertise or special equipment.
Meanwhile, both hacks leave intact the iPhone's many functions, including built-in camera and ability to access Wi-Fi networks. By now both procedures have been publicly disclosed so Apple can get down to the task of modifying it's iPhones to making them immune to such hacks...
Hotz, who said he collaborated online with a large number of people to develop the unlocking process, put up his unlocked iPhone for sale on eBay on Thursday. The highest bid reportedly was $12,600 late Friday. The 4GB iPhone model actually sells for $499.

Hi all. I will be recieving an Iphone from the US and wish to use it on the Vodafone network. Since the Iphone is of version 1.1.1, I am unsure on how it can get unlocked. Can somebody from Mumbai please give me the contact details of the person/shop which can unlock the phone? Thx

DO U KNOW ...... iphone will not support alphanumeric sender... if u receive any sms from a no like 65754dg, 675tr87t ur iphone sms application will get lock ... u cant send or see ur sms ... most of the bank(HSBC) and web sites have this kind of no ... im fixing this problem while unlocking (Bangalore, 3000rs) ... i can unlock 1.1.1 also but u will get 1.0.2 after unlocking ...

its true, best is to unsubscribe such sms if u r using iphone. other just reset all data and sms will start working on 1.0.2 unlocked phone

I know someone coming from the US next week, I will get it through them... but before that please beware about the 1.1.1 Firmware version... if that too gets unlocked then you can happily enjoy with the Iphone till next version release... 1.1.1 has capabilities to transfer music using WIFI.. I suggest you to buy the IPHONESIMFREE software... atleast they guarantee that they can break the future releases too for their customer... Its availiable for 45$... 400$ for Iphone and 45$ for unlocking... cool deal

Re: the hacking AT&T with boxes. I believe it was Steve Wozniak (not Jobs) who 'was' the technical guy. Jobs is a cocky business man and I doubt has the technical skill to code an HTML web page.

Yes, Jobs and Woz's first big adbenture in Cyberdom was making and selling those free long distance spoof boxes. The irony that the nation's long distance phone network in those pre-DeReg days was exclusively AT & T is not lost one me. ( Not that I really care... I live in Wyoming where there is no AT&T wireless service and GSM cell mode is a distant murmur) Be that as it may , anyone wanna bet that Apple goes into Lawsuit Mode over this ???

I have a better idea: tell Apple to SHOVE their stupid gadget until they decide that maybe playing contract-hardball with their clients isn't a good idea. Seriously! How stupid do you have to be to recognize, appreciate the significance of, and NOT BUY an expensive product that locks you into a sub-standard service? "Incredible?" "A lot of time on his hands" is what I would describe it as. Plus, I wonder how many $500 units he blew up before getting it right? No thanks.
