Will bring us new portable console next year
Almost ten years on, we're pretty sure you've forgotten about Sega's Dreamcast. The console enjoyed some attention in the space between the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, after which it was completely decimated by the latter. Developers were skeptical of the platform from the beginning, and finally abandoned it altogether when they realized that the PS2 was going to be the future. While Sonic the hedgehog lived on in several games in the years to come, Sega has been dismissed as a possible contender in the gaming hardware business.
Don't get excited now-it's still not a contender. The company has just announced the Sega Vision, which they claim will beat Sony's PSP, at least as a portable media player (PMP). The Vision will do music, movies, e-books, take photos and will play "Java mini games" (which sounds suspiciously like mobile games and not enjoyable at all). It will also feature a TV tuner for obvious purposes.
Honestly, must we care? Sure, you could buy the PSP for its PMP skills-it actually works out cheaper than most PMPs with the same capabilities-but the cherry on the PSP cake is that it's a pretty competent portable console for serious gamers. Sega needs to make this one stand out in the crowd of PMPs if they want our excitement. Maybe dancing monkeys. You can't really go wrong with dancing monkeys.
