Can hold up to 100GB
Sanyo announced their advancement in Blu-Ray technology. By increasing the power of the emitting beam to 450mW, the Blu-Ray laser can now support burning of data at 12x speed and can hold four layers of data which translates into 100GB storage space or 8 hours of video at 1080p resolution.
Currently, a single Blu-Ray layer can record up to 25GB of data and the largest available capacity of a BD disc is 50GB or capacity to record two layers. However, developing such a laser does not mean that they can be produced right away for commercial use. Before this can happen, Sanyo needs an approval from the Blu-Ray association as well as support from other manufacturers for the four layer format. Expect it to land in somewhere in first half of 2009.

That's awesome! Burning blu-ray's right now just isn't viable, hopefully this will help push things along. I've actually been working with Warner on some projects and they're looking for technology to continually improve pretty quickly.
