Samsung to Unveil World's Thinnest LCD TV

Samsung is likely to walk away with the honour of being the manufacturer of the thinnest LCD TV at the CES

Samsung Electronics is likely to hog the limelight at the prestigious Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week with its 6.5-7 millimeters thin flat-panel TV.

The only detail revealed at present is that the TV has an LED (light emitting diode) backlight, resting behind the LCD panel. TV manufacturers today prefer LEDs for their thinness and better overall light.

Currently, Philips holds the distinction of being the manufacturer of the thinnest LCD television; the 8mm prototype was unveiled at the IFA electronics show in Berlin last year.

However, the thinnest LCD TV available in retail stores today belongs to Sony at 9.9mm. Sony also holds the unique distinction of being the only manufacturer to launch the first commercial OLED (organic light emitting diode) TV  -  the 11-inch XEL-1 - in the US market.

CES 2009 could well see Samsung scoring over both Philips and Sony in the thinnest LCD TV category.
