SUSE Linux Goes Desi

Novell India today announced that SUSE Linux have been localized with support in five major languages namely Hindi, Bangla, Tamil, Gujarati, and Marathi.
Novell India today announced that the award-winning SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 and some of the key applications that run on the desktop operating system (OS) have been localized with support in five major languages namely Hindi, Bangla, Tamil, Gujarati, and Marathi.
The company claims that this will give users a smooth and consistent experience as they switch between menus, tools, and the bundled applications.
Commenting on this, Revathi Kasturi, managing director, Novell West Asia, said The localization will give a great boost to the e-Government initiatives by the State and Central governments in the project areas of community kiosks, as well as the ongoing education initiatives by both the Private and Public Sectors.
According to Novell, with this, the company aims at providing comprehensive localization, and not just partial translation. Hence, the company has identified a broad set of applications running on the OS and the local language incorporated.
Some of the applications identified by the Novell includes SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop Menus and Gnome, including the basic Graphic User Interface (GUI) and application menus; OpenOffice, the comprehensive Office Productivity Suite; Firefox; Evolution, an Email client that works with multiple Mail servers such as Lotus, Microsoft Exchange, and Novell Groupwise; Banshee, a media player; Beagle, a search engine; ZMD, a software for downloading updates from Novell automatically; F-spot, a photo viewer; and YaST, an administrative tool.
Now, with the release of the applications supporting five Indian languages, Linux is making an attempt to localize the applications in the Indian market.
