Harmonix has confirmed a sequel to the popular play-along music game "Rock Band"; it will feature a new range of instruments, online modes, and songs.

"Rock Band 2" promises the best set list ever in a music game. It will allow players import their previously-purchased "Rock Band" tunes, eliminating the need to re-purchase or re-download these songs.

Similar to Activision's recently announced "Guitar Hero World Tour", "Rock Band 2" too will feature most master recordings. The game will feature a play list of over 80 songs by a majority of female-fronted bands as also artists who've never contributed tunes to a music game.

In addition to all the "Rock Band" instruments along with many from the rival "Guitar Hero" franchise, "Rock Band 2" will also be compatible with a posse of new instruments like a sturdier drum kit for one and a Fender Stratocaster reproduction guitar lined with faux wood-grain buttons.

"Rock Band 2" will first be available on Microsoft's Xbox 360 in September 2008, followed by on Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 as well as Nintendo's Wii later this year. Further details will be revealed at the upcoming E3 Media and Business Summit next month.

When Rock Band 2 comes out for the Wii will we be able to use the instruments from Rock Band 1 on it. Meaning we would only have to purchase the game and not the instruments right?

I can't wait for this game to come out, I own Rock Band for the 360 and I've downloaded about 15 songs for it, and I am just stoked for the backward compatable DLC. All GH is doing is trying to make more money, they can't compete with RB, so they copy it and 'try' to make it better. But if Harmonix is promising the "best set list ever in a music game", then they're gonna deliver. All I can hope for is some Zeppelin, AC/DC, maybe a Beatles song like Revolution or Day Tripper, and maybe even some Pink Floyd. Cant wait!

Well did you hear that Guitar Hero is working on there own drum set? How flipping gay. Its Guitar Hero not Guitar/Drum Hero. Rock Band needs to get a patent on the Drum set at least. And they need more modern rock.

will the old rock band instruments still be used in the sequel or will we have to buy an entirely new set for another 170$?

If they decide to put a bass pedal on guitar hero's drum kit then I think personally, since owning 3 different drum kits from rock band, that it will be much better than rock band for the simply fact that the drums are being tested by real drummers who are hitting on them as much and as hard as they would their normal drums!!!

sum zeppelin and acdc would be great. Also, the fact you don't have to re-purchase and re-download DLC is awesome. Not having user-created contented is kind of disappointing

The key to this is in the drumkit. If Harmonix makes an affordable drumkit that adds a hi-hat, two cymbals, and an additional pedal for double-bass drum playing, while reconfiguring the current pads to be more like a real drumset (but keep the same color scheme), they will blow away the competition. In fact, Activision will get squashed.
