Report: India tops Asian Spammer List

Report: India tops Asian Spammer List

But the numbers leave us skeptical over the report's findings

As per Internet security company -- Trend Micro, India is the seventh largest spam producer in the world. Amongst Asian countries, India is accused for contributing to four percent of the total global spam, ahead of China, Korea, and Thailand. In total, the sum of spam sent from Asian countries comes to 16.57 per cent. So technically we've jumped over China who incidentally surpassed US in terms of broadband roll out.

To be noted, until August this year China (at 3.49 per cent contribution) was ahead of India (2.99 per cent then). So as per Trend Micro, in almost a month, spam percentage has increased by 1.27 per cent compared to one per cent of last year. In the last month itself, the amount of spam sent from India was even more than the volume of spam sent over the past one year! Something is surely wrong with these numbers...

Back in August, a study suggested that India generated least spam and at that time, the US lead the position for producing maximum spam. However, the Russians might be proud to over take US this month. Take a look at these figures:

Country - Percentage of worldwide spam
1. Russian Federation 11.92
2. United States 9.36
3. Brazil 7.48
4. Turkey 5.43
5. Columbia 5.34
6. Argentina 4.96
7. India 4.26
8. China 3.39
9. Spain 2.69
10. Republic of Korea 2.57

Along with the good of an increasing Internet penetration, we seem victim to the bad of spam and viruses as well. In November last year, Communication and Information Technology Minister said that 76 percent of e-mails originating from India are spam. Check your mail box on Yahoo or Hotmail and you'll find at least one spam or virus attached email, even today. Nevertheless, to have increased so much in volume over just a month, makes us skeptical of the entire report.
