Red Hat Scholarships worth Rs 10 Lakhs announced

Red Hat India, the Linux and Open Source provider together with Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, IIT Mumbai announced the Red Hat Scholarships-The Open Source Challenge today. The program is open to students from engineering colleges across India and carries a scholarship amount of upto 10 lakhs.
Mr Javed Tapia, Director, Red Hat India stated that the objective of the of Red Hat Scholarships is to reach out to Linux enthusiasts in engineering colleges across India and encourage the adoption of the open source philosophy." Education, Government and Enterprise partnership would be promoted to give recognition to OSS in the country. The education, corporate and the government space would be focused upon", he said.
Over 1500 Engineering Colleges across India are to participate. More than 30,000 students are estimated to be involved in the project by June 2006, which is one-fifth of the total number of students doing final year projects in engineering currently.
The advisory board includes Dr D.B.Pathak, Founder, Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology; Prof. S Sadagopan, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore and Mr Rajesh Jain, Director, Netcore Solutions among others.
Last year, an affordable solutions lab was set up at IIT for developing cost-effective IT solutions which would could be adapted to local requirements and provide hardware, software and integration support.
A 'cathedral structure' is suggested for the project where the students will be guided by faculty members and professionals in the industry. The industry professionals would be expected to spend 2-3 hours per week between September -November and January-March when students are given their projects.
Mr Pathak said that there is a lot of initiative being taken to develop local language interface for Linux across India but entrepreneur support was not forthcoming enough. Mr Rajesh Jain of Netcore and Mr Jiten Shah of VJTI are actively involved in this matter.
The total scholarship amount is 10 lakhs: Rs 2 lakhs for the first prize, Rs 1,50,000 for the second, 1 lakh for the third and five consolation prizes worth Rs 50,000 each. The remaining Rs 3 lakhs has been proposed for 'Special Category Prizes' for rural and girls colleges.
For judging the prizes, the design, coding, standards, quality assurance, level of innovation, originality would form some of the criteria. There should not be a slight hint of plagiarism. The evaluation will be done according to IIT Mumbai norms.
There is likely to be a registration fee of Rs 100 to be paid to one's institution. The School of IT website will have the registrations open online by 16th April.
Dr D.B. Pathak said, "The aim here is to develop a common forum where the country has to become the net-giver. The IPR (Intellectual Property Right) will belong to the School of IT and not to any individual."
All software submitted to the Red Hat Scholarship program will be in the public domain under one of the popular Open Source licences such as GPL, LGPL, BSD etc. so that it can benefit the entire community.

As my father is a junior clerk, it is vary difficult to giving me the engineering study,because my elder brother is completed his B.Tech this year.But he has dare so he is joining me in CIPET, BBSR.So be down towaeds me.as per my education beckground ,i got 76% @ 61% in 10th and +2 respectively.

Sir I am belonging to a poor family in south India. My parents arlonging to a daily wages category working in fireworks factory and with the help of my uncle i completed my plus two study and now I have joined in the EEE course in Einstein Engineering college,Thirunelveli. I have taken a rank 2349 (trade rank 105, sc trade rank 13)in WBJELET exam. But in the time of councelling I wasn't able to get a vacent sit in any of the engg. colleges of West Bengal. iI want to know why was it happened!
