Ray Tracing Demoed by Nvidia

Nvidia recently showed off an interactive ray tracing simulation using four of their latest Quadro FX line of GPUs set in a Quadro Plex 2100 D4 Visual Computing System.
If you thought the graphics war is being only fought on the gaming and consumer front, think again! After Intel revealed details about its Larrabee platform, its time for some muscle flexing by long time graphics major Nvidia.
Nvidia recently showed off an interactive ray tracing simulation. Ray tracing, sometimes referred to as the 'atom bomb of graphics technology' is used to generate images by tracing the path of light through pixels and is capable of producing a very high degree of realism. However, research and development on this front has always been far lesser than we would have expected partly owing to the fact that the technology was expensive, time-consuming and extremely slow, which ruled out its commercial usage. Nvidia used four of their latest Quadro FX line of GPUs set in a Quadro Plex 2100 D4 Visual Computing System to demonstrate an anti-aliased Bugatti Veyron rendered with over two million polygons. It ran at a smooth 30 FPS at 1080p resolution (1920x1080). This was perhaps for the first time that ray tracing was demonstrated using pure GPU power. Intel too had showcased ray tracing earlier - albeit with CPU power. The entire Nvidia set up would have cost almost $11000.
Although we still have a long way to go until ray tracing enters mainstream computing, the new race to master it will only accelerate its development.
