RIM Intros 'Facebook for BlackBerry'

With the new application, BlackBerry users will be able to wirelessly send and view messages, photos, pokes, and wall posts using their Facebook accounts.

Research in Motion (RIM) has launched a new software application that will enable BlackBerry users to access Facebook, the popular social networking Web site, on their smart phones.

With the new application, BlackBerry users will be able to wirelessly send and view messages, photos, pokes, and wall posts using their Facebook accounts.

They will also be able to take photographs and upload them to Facebook along with captions and tags; invite friends; manage events, photos, and online status; everything on-the-go.

The application will allow users to automatically receive a notification in case of new messages sent by their friends and colleagues. Users can set alerts for Facebook-related content, and quickly access essential features with on-screen icons.

According to Mike Lazaridis, president and co-chief executive officer of RIM, "Facebook is one of the fastest growing Web destinations among BlackBerry smart phone users, and it has become an important element in the evolving fabric of personal communication."

As per several industry reports, even at this nascent stage of the market, where only about 19 percent of adult consumers access social networks on their PCs, these adults also happen to regularly access the very same networks on their mobile phones.

The 'Facebook for BlackBerry smart phones' application will be available as a free download, at www.facebook.com.
