RCom Alloted GSM Spectrum

Following the allotment, RCom is planning to place an order for 80 to 100 million lines for GSM mobile services.
With dreams finally turning into reality, Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications (RCom), India's second-largest mobile operator, has been allocated GSM spectrum in 14 circles by the Department of Telecom (DoT).
The company has been allotted 4.4 MHz of start-up spectrum in these 14 circles.
RCom, which is the country's largest CDMA service provider, already has GSM operations in 6 service areas. The company has over 40 million customers, of which 35.5 million are on CDMA, while the remaining make use of their GSM services.
Following the allotment, the telecom major is planning to place an order for 80 to 100 million lines for GSM mobile services. This would be the country's largest, and one of the world's biggest orders for telecom equipment.
The company has called for a meeting of potential suppliers at the end of this week to choose vendors. Important equipment manufacturers such as Huawei, Alcatel Lucent, ZTE, Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia, amongst others, are being considered as prospective vendors.
The order will pertain to the next three years, and is anticipated to be settled in the next couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, the fixed production capacity of GSM Electronics worldwide is 250 to 300 million lines annually, which signifies that the order could encompass more than 10 percent of the global production over the next three years.
