Pentagon Bans Google Mapping Team
Techtree News Staff Email Print
Mar 7, 2008
Please do not expose our military bases. Our "friends" are going to get us!

The Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, has banned Google Mapping teams from capturing videos of the country's military bases. The orders followed reports of Google Mapping teams capturing videos of a Texan military base at street-level.

Not only did they capture the videos but added the sensitive information to "Street View", a section on Google Maps that allows users to click on a location and see the panoramic view of that spot.

Defense officials are deeply concerned about the possibility of three-dimensional panoramic images of security-sensitive areas like military bases being used by vested interests, anti-social elements, in general all 'enemies' of the US. The Pentagon has lost no time in sending orders to all US military bases that no filming of military facilities will be permitted, especially not by civilians.

Google officials have reportedly admitted that they mistakenly recorded videos of the military base Fort Sam Houston in Texas. They're believed to have now removed the videos from the Web site.
