Panasonic Goes Wide with DMC FX35

Techtree News Staff, Jan 30, 2008 1259 hrs IST

An unusual combination of compact camera and wide-zoom lens, the DMC-FX35 boasts a super-wide 25mm zoom lens.

Panasonic has unveiled a slew of digital cameras at the PMA 2008 trade show in Las Vegas.

Of which, the new Lumix DMC-FX35 seems to be the show stealer.

An unusual combination of compact camera and wide-zoom lens, the DMC-FX35 boasts a super-wide 25mm zoom lens.

The 10.1 mega pixels camera features 4x optical zoom, advanced intelligent auto mode, 25-100mm f/2.8-5.6 Leica DC Vario-Elmarit zoom lens with optical image stabilization, and fourth generation Venus Engine image processor among others.

The FX35 sports a 2.5-inches LCD screen, 2.5fps (up to 5 images in standard jpeg, or 3 images in fine jpg) burst mode at full resolution, and video mode that can capture up to 720p high definition video clips at 30fps. Sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to ISO 1,600 at full resolution.

Panasonic's DMC-FX35 will be available in March 2008 in Silver, Black, and Blue for around $350.

Panasonic also announced the 8.1 mega pixels DMC-FS3, the 10.1 mega pixels DMC-FS20, and the 10.1 mega pixels DMC-FS5.

Amongst these, the DMC-FS3 features DC Vario-Elmarit lens with 3x optical zoom and new image processing engine. Whereas the other two feature 30mm wide-angle Leica DC lens with 4x optical zoom and intelligent auto mode.

The DMC-FS3 will be available in Blue, Pink, Green, Silver, and Black for around $199.95. Meanwhile, the FS20 will come in Pink, Black, and Silver for about $300, and the FS5 in Red, Black and Silver for around $250. All three cameras will be available in February.

Also introduced at the PMA 2008 were the Lumix DMC-TZ5 and the Lumix DMC-TZ4; both featuring 28mm wide-angle, 10x optical zoom Leica DC lens, and advanced intelligent auto mode, among others.

The DMC TZ5 is available in Blue, Black, and Silver for around $350 while the DMC TZ4 is available in Black and Silver for about $300. Both cameras will ship in late March.

Finally, Panasonic also unveiled two new point-and-shoot cameras: the 10.1 mega pixels DMC-LZ10, and the 8.1 mega pixels DMC-LZ8.

Both feature Leica DC Vario-Elmar lenses and wide-angle shooting (30mm on the LZ10, and 32mm on the LZ8).

The two cameras also feature 2.5-inches LCD screens adjustable to various lighting conditions, manual controls, convenient AA-battery operation, 5x optical zoom, intelligent auto mode, and the fourth generation Venus engine. New to the feature set is an advanced scene mode that gives consumers manual control with frequently-used scene modes.

Available in Black and Silver, the LZ8 and the LZ10 will hit stores in February, and will be priced at approximately $180 and $250 respectively.

I bought an FX33 outside India (doesn't seem to have released in India yet). It has 28mm wide angle. The best part is its intelligent auto mode which kind of 'understands' what you want to do. Decent face detection as well. Photos are really good at 8.1 MP. Looks good and is sleek. I would suggest users to try Panasonic as it appears to be making great cameras which have been overlooked / overshadowed.

I still dont understand why the slim-and-sleek type of cams are not being upgraded to PMPs. All that is needed is a chip that plays back DivX format at a specific resolution on the cam screen (input given through mem-card or USB devices). If the problem is with battery backup, I have always felt that changing batteries are easier with a camera rather than any of the others because most of them are common and availability is almost a non-issue..!!
