Sony PS3 Outsells Wii in Japan

Sony PS3 Outsells Wii in Japan

Techtree News Staff, Nov 30, 2007 1937 hrs IST

Industry observers feel it may be just the fresh beginning that Sony was in want of- to regain its lost foothold in the global video games market.

For the first time, Sony's PlayStation 3 has outsold Nintendo's Wii in Japan, raising hopes that Sony may win back its dominant position in the global video games market.

Game magazine publisher, Enterbrain, which keeps tabs on gaming trends, revealed that Sony's PS3, launched about a year ago, sold 183,217 units in Japan as compared to 159,193 units of Nintendo's Wii in the four weeks leading-up to November 25. Which means, the PS3 outsold the Wii -- a record first -- in Japan.

The development heralds well for Sony as the company has been steadily losing ground to Nintendo, thanks to the latter's Wii -- with its new concept remote, not to mention a string of game titles, including the likes of 'Wii Sports' and so on.

Industry observers feel it may be just the fresh beginning that Sony was in want of- to regain its lost foothold in the global video games market. Then again, it may be too early to paint too rosy a picture for Sony and its console.

After all, observers don't see Sony's PS3 doing too well abroad during X'Mas, mainly because it's costlier than other consoles, and has a lot less software.

Those are the overall figures. The last week showed Wii taking the lead again, however. Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that Wii sold 54,362 units between Nov. 19 and Nov. 25. By comparison the PS3 sold 50,564 units in the same period.
