PS3 Gears Ahead of XBOX 360

After trailing behind XBOX 360 for a while, PS3 has finally broken into the lead.

Microsoft's XBOX 360 has been ruling the gaming console market in 2007. Sony's PlayStation 3 was literally panting. Hard pressed to catch up, Sony's PlayStation 3 has finally managed to overtake XBOX in US. But in last few months of 2008, PS 3 has left XBOX 360 behind. Games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Blu-ray support have helped PS 3 to lead.

To make up for the lost time, Microsoft recently announced couple of updates to its XBOX 360 package: price slash of 20GB model by $299, sell consoles with 60GB storage priced at $349, and updates in their XBOX live services.

On the other hand, Sony has included new features in its award-winning XMB user interface. Moreover, Sony had already slashed PS 3 console price from $599). According to NPD group, retailers sold 208,700 PS3s compared to 186,600 XBOX 360 consoles in the US.

Recently XBOX tied up with Netflix for streaming movies on the XBOX 360's Live Network. Sony too revealed a movie download service for the PlayStation Network and also promised to offer the new 80GB version of the PS3 at same price, $399 in September.

Both XBOX and PS 3 have had their share of ups and downs. Initially, PS 3 faced console shortage with developers taking their own time to program high-definition graphics games. Later, XBOX 360 was embarrassed with the Red Ring of Death (RRoD). Enthusiast programmers and gamers have even modded those consoles. What really pushes PS 3 ahead is the high definition graphics and Blu-ray support. On the contrary, both gaming console rivals dismiss Nintendo Wii as an "expensive niche gaming device".

Peter Dille, head of marketing for Sony's U.S. video-game business, said, "The price has been addressed. We are at $399 and I think that's right in the wheelhouse for a lot of people, especially those who have high-def in their homes." In India, high price of PS 3 is the only factor that has kept its growth stagnant besides availability of games for the same. Hopefully, Sony will play fair with India.

As an owner of an xbox 360 and a PS3 I find this article very biased and one-sided - I think most others will agree, unless they are deluded sony fanboys like yourselves! I think you retards should stop and think before you copy & paste your bullsh*t articles and stick them online! Not much info on FFXIII now being on Xbox is there?

FFXIII belongs on the PS3, Sony just did a bad job with its launch and SquareEnix can't hang around and lose money on its high budget game which is sure to be just as crappy as every FF since FF7. You can have it you xbot losers, you probably aren't going to buy it anyway. Oh..and Microsoft "stole" the show at E3 all right, by ripping off nintendo and sony in the worst way I've ever seen and by stealing exclusives with their typical business practices. Then they bashed the PS3 while Sony made no mention of either of the other consoles. The 360 is garbage...and all of your systems will probably RROD before FFXIII even hits the shelves..

that's kinda weird i have all 3 systems and be far it appears that granted the wii is not high priced it has been outselling and being on back order for the longest time. However the graphics are not that great. But that doesn't really mean much either comparing to the profit that nintendo is making from all the accessories sales. as for the ps3 the only game that i have seen by far that even shows that it is worth a damn is metal gear solid 4. as for xbox having multiple exclusive titles that have been on want and need for the longest time. and people talking about the rrod about microsoft well what about all the ps3's that caught fire. or just were bricks when they were taken out the package? each system has it's flaws so fanboys of sony fanboys of xbox go get a SMS and enjoy i :) lol

and by the way i'm not a wii fanatic either i would prefer my 360 over anything but it's just the truth. I've compared and played all 3 systems and they all have their perks but don't bash a system for copying another systems attributes. every company does that. sony did that with the ps3 when they originally got rid of the vib controller (stupid move on their end) and try to charge shitloads just to get people to buy them. 360 had the camera and some of the arcade games actually used the camera to function. ok what's the problem with that people still get involved with the game motion and everything oh but the wii is based off of motion so how is that so bad? 5 year old technology outselling the most recent? come on i wouldn't be surprised if sony nintendo and microsoft are monitoring these sites and calling people morons lol. prime example sony giving microsoft the rights to blue ray lol i can't wait to hear the argument over that.

Wow I'd love to read some of your brilliant insight. Could you be a little more vague with your biased fanboy assumption? I agree with the person above. I'm pretty sure that the ps3 has outsold the 360 for every month except one (april or may). They blamed supply issues well after christmas, now after a month of leading they are behind again. I could care either way, actually I see the big three splitting the market this gen. I just hate ingnorant fanboys making grand predictions. Graduate highschool.

How did this get published? The PS3 is definitely NOT ahead of the 360 in overall sales. I don't know about month-to-month sales, but still, this article is very suspect. Methinks Techtree is owned by Sony, or is a mouthpiece for them. Even if there isn't foul play in this false reporting, this has alerted me to the authenticity of anything on Techtree

I would've tried something like "The Ps3's high price and initially slim game library contributed to the Ps3's slow start. Now that Sony has addressed those issues, the Ps3 seems to be making a come back." And both consoles have HD gaming. Both can support up to 1080p, the only difference is that the Ps3 uses Blu-Ray which provides more on-disc storage. Get your facts straight.

PS3, what a joke, what type of news is this. why would i want a so called supper computer that doesn?t even output 120Hz refresh rate when your watching a blue ray movie, it can only handle up to 60Hz, lets not forget the 256MB ram. What a joke.

Maybe you can get away with this kind of NONSENSE in India, but you are held accountable for what you say here in the US. You just can't MAKE UP sales figures. The Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3 at every turn over here in the states, kids just DON'T want a PS3. . . Sony doesn't even come close, . . and Sony doesn't play fair with anyone friend. The RROD you talk about is old news, and MS gives you a 3 year waranty from the date of purchase just in case........

Ummm... the PS3 has been outselling the 360 here in the states almost every month (except for one I think) in 2008. Yes, the 360 has sold more OVERALL units so far, but Sony is incrementally making up the difference. I have all three consoles too --always have owned 'em all in each generation -- so don't label me a fanboy. Just stating the facts Jack. That said, the reporting in this article is bad (any good reporter/editor checks the facts before publishing) and the grammar is attrocious, which is what you get when you outsource English editorial jobs overseas to countries like India. Yes they speak English; but as this article shows, speaking and writing English well are two different beasts. One more thing, on what planet is the RROD old news. According to most BB I read, there are still people experiencing this unholy terror.

PS3 hasn't had anything over 720p yet. GTA4 was in 620p on PS3 and 720p on 360. 360's GPU is 3 times faster, thats why it can produce much better lighting and textures in higher resolution. PS3 has you all fooled.

Maybe before you attack someone for not knowing things maybe you should have all the facts. Those sales figures he uses are NPD June figures that's a fact. Secondly Sony's XMB is a Emmy award winner that's a fact. Just because you don't like something does not mean that its the truth. Those tiny things like facts are pesky sometimes.

M$ say that they will not go blu-ray which is pretty stupid by any definition. Games have progressed from being on floppy disk through to CD and now from DVD to Blu Ray. Will it be cost effective for every future game to come out on 4 or 5 DVD's - I think not!

My God, you are off base. .First off the xbox360 has a more than 2 to 1 advantage here in the US and if ANY of the gaming sites are right today Sony BOMBED at E3 and the 360 stole the show. Sony's movie download service is a joke compared to the 360's, . . how do I know? . I have BOTH consoles. . I regularly buy all my games on the 360, except for the exclusives, which leaves like 2. Just do a google search next time and get the facts straight Sonyboy.

I have a mild preference for the xbox because I do all my gaming on a pc... Easier to port= more likely to have better games. Although in all honesty, both are great gaming platforms you just need a high definition TV to make it worth your while.

Did anybody on the staff even bother to do any research at all? I'm just going to reiterate what the comments below already said. - The XBOX 360 and the PS3 both offers High Def gaming and movie playback. - Only Sony thinks the Wii is an "expensive niche gaming device". - Sony might have outselled Microsoft in the US for a few months, but if I'm not mistaking, Microsoftis still in the lead when it comes to sales. - Finally, the XMB is not award winning. What award did it win pray tell? Besides, the XBOX 360 had a similar function right from the beginning. It seems that the PS3 is playing catch up with the XBOX 360 in many ways. Both consoles have their good points and bad points. But that is not the point here. Try doing some research before writing an article in the future. This is just bad journalism.
