PC Shipments Hit 2.2 Million in 3Q07

In terms of unit PC shipments in Q3 2007, the top five PC vendors are: HP (1st), HCL (2nd), Lenovo (3rd), Acer (4th), and Dell (5th), as per Gartner.

Personal computer shipments (desk and mobile) in the country have reached over 2.2 million units in the third quarter of this year, registering a 19.7 percent increase over Q3 last year, according to Gartner.

In terms of unit PC shipments in Q3 2007, the top five PC vendors are: HP (1st), HCL (2nd), Lenovo (3rd), Acer (4th), and Dell (5th), each registering a 26-, 38.6-, 45-, 122.3-, 59-, and 19.7- percent growth over Q3 2006.

Diptarup Chakraborti, principal research analyst (client computing group) of Gartner, explained that HP continues to retain its numero uno position, thanks to a robust growth in mobile PC shipments. Whereas, Lenovo, Acer, and HCL continue to out-grow the market lead, mainly due to strong growth in mobile PCs, as well as through home market sales.

Furthermore, the country's mobile PC sales have grown 99.4 percent to nearly half a million in Q3 2007, with top five mobile PC brands being: HP (1st), Lenovo (2nd), Acer (3rd), Dell (4th), and Toshiba (5th).

The reason Acer made it to the top three mobile PC vendors, according to Gartner, is that its focus on channel partners and large format retail outlets has begun to pay dividends.

Meanwhile, desk-based PC shipments have also grown 7.8 percent to nearly 1.72 million in Q3 2007, and the top five desk-based PC brands are: HP (1st), HCL (2nd), Lenovo (3rd), Acer (4th), and Dell (5th).

This, according to Gartner, is the highest growth registered in this segment in the last three quarters, driven mainly by large brands getting support from the SMB segment.

Gartner also observed that large format retail stores on the PC market (a comparatively recent phenomenon) have started driving PC sales -- especially mobile PC sales in urban areas -- in a big way.
