PC Sales Up; Apple 3rd Largest PC Manufacturer

Apple overtakes Acer to put itself in the 3rd position; PC sales are up

Apple's fortunes are steadily on the rise. Recent Gartner estimates put the hardware manufacturer at the 3rd position in the U.S., pushing past Acer in the PC market. Macs now enjoy a 8.5 per cent share of the PC pie. Apple saw Mac sales rise more than 38 per cent to nearly 1.4 million units in the US during the three-month period ending June. This puts it behind Dell and HP; overtaking Acer.

In the US, Apple's percent market share growth took it from 6.4 per cent of the market in 2007 to 8.5 per cent during the second quarter of 2008. Dell continues to lead in the US, with a 31.9 per cent market share, followed by HP with 25.3 per cent and then Apple.

The US market grew by around 4.2 per cent, despite the country's poor economic situation. Gartner warns though, that the growth came at the expense of revenue, as PC manufacturers slashed prices and offered discounts to keep the sales going.

Worldwide: HP is still number one with 18.1 percent market share, followed by Dell -- 15.6 per cent, and Acer -- 9.4 per cent. Lenovo -- 7.8 per cent, and Toshiba -- 4.4 percent make for the remaining top five.
