Opera 9.6 Takes Aim At Chrome

Never underestimate the competition, we always say

Google Chrome may not have met with much praise, but the developers at Opera aren t taking any chances. The last thing they need is for their excellent (but much-neglected) browser to lose market share to this new entrant.

The core of Opera won't change much, but 9.6 will address a lot of the bugs and performance issues of 9.5. The new 9.6 beta also scores an 85 percent on the Acid3 test; Opera 9.5 scores 83. In the UI department, Opera 9.6 now lets you drag tabs between two windows -- not a big deal, but apparently someone saw Chrome do this and decided that Opera should too.

Some experts may be ready to call Chrome the death of Opera, but clearly there are exceptions. The sun won't set on our Norwegian friends just yet.

The option to drag tabs between windows is an indication of how Google's plan to stimulate the browser eco-system is yielding early results. Whether Opera suffers or flourishes in this new environment of competition from Google, will depend on their ability to quickly deliver innovation and features that users really want.
