Nokia Previews Series 40 Sixth Edition

Nokia Previews Series 40 Sixth Edition

Techtree News Staff, Jul 10, 2008 1429 hrs IST

Nokia has quietly introduced the Series 40 Sixth Edition along with the Supernova Series but what does it mean?

Techtree had reported about the new Supernova Series handsets from Nokia with the changes in user interface (UI).

And, those changes are by no means small; Nokia has quietly introduced the Series 40 Sixth Edition along with the Supernova Series (oh, why didn't we tell you earlier?). But what does this mean? For one of the most widely used native non-smart phone operating system (OS).

For starters, the new OS supports enhanced Java APIs such as Location API for J2ME (JSR-179) for creation of location-based applications. For tech enthusiasts, it means GPS support with an external GPS unit to obtain location-specific information and the inclusion of Cell Broadcast Service message handling (JSR-205).

For you and me, there's the addition of support for Adobe's Flash 3 Lite 3 player that would allow running animated swf files and time-date related wallpapers; extension of theme effects to radio and multimedia player applications; and horizontal scrolling of lists in the UI.

Series 60's Maps application will also be seen in Series 40, albeit an older version. A re-vamped email client and browser support for pop-up windows completes the picture.

In a sense, the Sixth Edition of S40 brings it closer to big brother S60 though we don't see a merging of features in the near future as the two platforms are targeted at different audiences.
