No Price Cut for Xbox 360 in India

No Price Cut for Xbox 360 in India

Shubhashish, May 02, 2008 1249 hrs IST

There are no clear answers why Microsoft hasn't slashed prices of Xbox 360 in India despite announcing an 11 to 20 percent price reduction in other Asian markets.

Microsoft has decided to cut prices of its Xbox 360 arcade system by 11 to 20 percent in the Asian market. However, the company said that it has no plans of bringing the cost down for the Indian market. A company official said, "Microsoft takes a strategic approach to its products in each regional market and sets pricing accordingly. In India, our celebratory offer announced for both -- Core and Pro consoles a few months back is a fantastic example of the same. Currently in India, the Xbox 360 Core console is priced at Rs 14,990 and comes with two free games; Xbox 360 Pro is priced at Rs 23,990 and comes with four free games; and XBOX Elite is priced at Rs 34,990. Whereas, Sony PlayStation 3 is priced between Rs 23,000 and Rs 26,000 for its different models."

The Xbox 360 system, after the cut: will cost $340 (Rs 13,600) in Taiwan, a drop of 17 percent; $369 (Rs 14,800) or 5 percent less in South Korea; about 11 percent less in Hong Kong; and 20 percent less -- $366 (Rs 14,600) in Singapore. Microsoft had earlier reduced price of its console for the Japanese market in October with the premium version falling in price from $348 to around $304 (Rs 12,200). Also, the price-cut happened for the European market in March, reducing the retail price of the Arcade model to GBP 159.99 (Rs 12,900).

The company official further said, "At this stage of growth in the Indian gaming market, one needs to see who's truly driving the industry. Xbox 360 continues to lead the Indian gaming market. We were the first ones to bring the next generation console to India and have since then taken several initiatives to expand and grow the industry in India. In November 2007, we introduced the Xbox Live service in India, the ultimate online gaming arena which connects over 10 million gamers across 26 countries. For 2008, we have title line-ups in India like Ninja Gaiden II, Gears of War 2, among others."

Microsoft claims that Xbox 360 is home to 66 percent of all third-party game sales in India. "From the beginning, we've had a very deliberate strategy to secure core gamers first, and then expand the market," the company official concluded.

Both the consoles are quite expensive. I think PS2 is the best option for console gaming. If we all practice a little self restraint these prices of XBOX360 and PS3 would come down to affordable range. Wait and watch, I'am sure by end of 2010 we will have both these consoles available for 10k or less.

It seems like all u guys argue about is price???? but have u considered that Sony PS3 contains a blu-ray player so it would be better worth for money! & therefore worth spending money for......

While that is a plus point, this is primarily a gaming console and it is meant purely to play games. If someone has a good HD TV and comparable sound system, then it makes sense to get the Playstation 3. But Blue Ray makes sense only if you have compatable hardware. Else you will be hard pressed to see the difference between DVDs and Blue Ray movies.

Exactly, the great Microsoft dumps all the old stocks from other PAL regions (Europe) into India while charging more as well!!! While PS3 40 GB version are all new stock in the Indian market!!! Sony also releases the special PS3 bundle also here like the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Bundle where the game is free with the 40GB console!!

man, it doesn't matter if XBox 360 feels if it is the first one to bring "the next generation console to India"... PS3 is priced lower and i'll buy that, especially since it seems like Microsoft is not plannin to lower its prices anytime soon.

Hello... Where did you got the idea that PS3 is priced lower. Xbox360 has 3 versions of price Rs. 14990, 24.990 and 34990. It is that Elite version that is so costly. And before you rant about the costliness of Elite version, please first of all ask of yourself the question that Do You really need the elite version? Only 2 extra worthwhile things it has compared to other xbox360 version. Namely :- 1) A HDMI port which is only usefull if you have a good LCD TV costing worth Rs.70,000 or more. If you have that TV I don't think that then Elite version's price should bother you. 2) A 120GB Hardisk compared to 20GB of Xbox360 Premium and 40 GB of PS3. That is why it is expensive. There is much more to it than simply the cost of both version.

xbox 360 elite is rs 34,990 and maximum for a ps3 u have to pay is rs 26000. so ps3 is cheaper

Are you joking ? Or are you simply stupid ? Just because the Xbox 360 has an Elite version you say the PS3 is cheaper !!!! Even if we take up your ridiculous argument that there is a 10k price gap between the two consoles, you will make that up by buying just 20 games. PS3 games are around 500 bucks more than Xbox 360 games and if you buy around 2 games a month, you will easily exceed the cost of even the Elite Xbox easily. Not to mention the Elite has 80 GB more than the PS3 and a lot of other stuff !
