In a recent interview with Financial Times, Kazuo Hirai, president and group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, said that the PlayStation 3 is already a far better value than rivals (Xbox 360, Wii) half its prices.
As reported, Sony has no plans for price cuts this year. "The answer is yes, if you're asking, 'Are these the prices we're going with this Christmas,'" said Hirai.
Major games, consoles and other consumer electronics are offered with hefty price cut since Christmas is looked upon as a major sale-booster season in the West. Released for $499, an 80GB PS3 console now costs $399. This price is still higher than Nintendo's Wii for $249 and Microsoft Xbox 360 for $199 due to recent price cut. In today's fluctuating world economy, Sony has decided to gamble during the holiday season - Christmas - by selling PS3 with the same price tag.
Hirai further compares PS3's hard drive and Blu-ray ready capabilities which score over Xbox 360. Sony is trying its level best to include more features in the PS3 and has big plans for the holiday season already - LittleBigPlanet, Resistance and Fallout 3 games are expected soon. Apart from that, highly anticipated Home community service and new firmware 2.5 version will be out during the holiday season.
