Iwata-san apologizes for lack of Mario and Zelda titles at E3 2008; talks about the iPhone
Iwata-san, president of Nintendo apologized to the "core" gamers for the fiasco that was their E3 2008 conference. Speaking to Forbes, Iwata said that, "We are sorry about [the E3] media briefings, specifically for those who were expecting to see Nintendo show something about Super Mario or Legend of Zelda. If there is any perception that Nintendo is ignoring the core gamers, it's a misunderstanding and we really want to get rid of that misunderstanding by any means." He went on to add that we should expect these 'core' titles to show up soon "[...] the fact of the matter is the so-called 'big titles' need a long, long development period... We really didn't think this year's E3 media briefing was the time to do so."
Other comments by Iwata included an increased shipment of Wii consoles to the U.S. -- where the Wii is still hard to find ("We could not imagine [demand] would be that high"), with a production run of 2.4 million Wiis per month scheduled this year. And a comment on the iPhone: "I use the iPhone myself. I know that it's an attractive product...", Iwata then goes on to add that while he sees some overlap between the users of the Nintendo DS and the iPhone, that overlap is not too big. More here.
