New Wii - Due 2011?

If not today, expect an official announcement regarding the new Wii some time in early 2009!
According to folks at Whattheyplay, the Nintendo Wii is set to reinvent itself by 2011. Purported to be the "next generation" Nintendo console, this would not be a mere refresh of the current hardware. Instead, it will be a true successor to the Wii. Nintendo seems to be busy "promoting" the future device amongst its game developing and publishing community. The device, which some say could end up as the "Wii HD," is far from an official announcement. Nevertheless, there are people hoping to hear something about this today, as Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is scheduled to deliver his annual fall presentation.
As for the prospective specs, there is no confirmation regarding that bit as of now. However, some things like full-HD support, backward compatibility, and a local storage medium is expected. For those who are skeptical, here are some statistics on the amount of money spent on R&D by Nintendo. Back in 2003, they spent $34 million; this increased to $103 million by 2006 and by 2007, it had touched $370 million. That's a dramatic growth in just over four years. Although some of the funds might have been diverted to the DS project, but a 10-fold increase in the R&D budget is phenomenal!
