New Tweet Notifications being Tested

Update notifications like in Search to be implemented in main timeline

Twitter has announced that the testing of Twitter update notifications has begun. As per the notification at the Twitter Status blog, a very limited test of notifications has been started. Not many users would get to be part of this test.

Twitter's new update notification feature will show the number of tweets received by the user. This is similar to the notifications received on the search page for a term on Twitter. On clicking the notification, new tweets related to the search query slides down.

This tweets update notification would be easy to implement for it already exists for Search feature. Slowly, it might be implemented in the @replies section too.

Getting update notifications without having to refresh/reload the page would be good. Recently, Facebook integrated Live Feed update feature for showing real-time updates from the users.

Twitter had earlier implemented auto-update feature but that bombed the scalability and eventually was halted. With rapidly updating timelines, it will be difficult as well as irritating for users to keep track of the updates. Not everyone can get use to this and hence, we won't be surprising if Twitter takes the click-and-view the notifications route.

No specific time frame or number of users availing this feature was mentioned. We need to wait till Twitter rolls out the feature to all users.
