New Trojan Stalks Virtual Gamers

The Trojan targets massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPG), especially 'Gamania' and 'Wowtaiwan' that are meant for the Taiwanese audience.

There's a new Trojan on the prowl, and this time, it's attacking online gamers.

Security firm, MicroWorld Technologies, has warned about a Trojan named "Win 32.OnLineGames.dr" that steals user names and passwords of online gaming accounts. The Trojan targets massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPG), especially 'Gamania' and 'Wowtaiwan' that are meant for the Taiwanese audience.

"Win 32.OnLineGames.dr" creeps and crawls into computers either through offers and help notes posted in game forums by hackers, or by exploiting browser vulnerabilities.

The Trojan is written in the Delphi language, and injects its DLL component into running processes, placing an autorun.inf file within the root of each drive to ensure the infected file gets activated each time a drive is opened.

Once activated, the file snoops around, stealing confidential information from naive users, then sending it to a remote hacker. Sometimes, the stolen information might pop-up on a malicious Web site, open for all to see.

Thus armed with user names and passwords, Trojan writers can wreak havoc, logging onto victims' accounts, and trading virtual goods/services for real world money.

Speaking about possible ramifications, MicroWorld CEO, Govind Rammurthy, said that the online gaming economy is much bigger than meets the eye. All gaming sites put together would account for nearly half a billion dollars.

No surprise then that malware writers are increasingly training guns on virtual game players.

To fight them, gaming companies need to come up with more sophisticated authentication procedures, while users need to use more competent protection for their computers.
