The free operating system is based on Linux and works on just about any device with storage

Niket Chandrashekar, a 20-year-old engineering from New Horizon College in Bangalore, has developed a portable Operating System that can be stored and operated on just about any device with a storage option - even a mobile phone. Developed almost entirely using open source tools and with Wine (a Windows emulator for Linux, which allows Windows programs to run on that operating system), this OS is based on the Linux kernel.

The OS known as LinuXP supports many Windows XP, Vista and 7 applications. It can also recover lost and accidentally deleted files, locate and install drivers for printers and other devices connected to it. The amazing portability of this OS means that you can carry your work along with the OS on pen drives or mobile phones and simply plug it into any PC or laptop to start working from anywhere.

When asked about how he thought about creating this innovative OS, Chandrashekar said, "I was thinking of creating a smaller program that can work like an OS while studying certain innate limitations of the existing operating systems".

"Since the whole of this software - with whatever work one has done on it - can be saved in portable storage devices without changes to the format or design, you can retrieve them on any laptop or desktop without having to worry about things like formatting. Also, even while used on someone's device, you can make sure the data it carries is safe," he added.

When asked if there is any licensing or IP concern in using this software, Chandrashekar said there is none. "It took about seven months for me to develop this software, which can step in and perform the tasks of an OS, in case the system does not have one and contains important files," he added. The OS also has utilities that let you not only lock folders, but also hide them, thus protecting your data from unauthorized access. A few months ago, he had created a free software with similar functionality for XP, and now it comes with LinuXP. Chandrashekar plans to put LinuXP online soon for anyone to be able to download and use it.

Opensource is the brainchild of many million developers. Obviously one person cannot take all the credit. We can appreciate this guy's efforts. Thats good. But to call this an Indian invention is too rude. We Indians are good at stealing ideas and then passing them off as ours! Today, anybody can build a linux operating system with Opensuse Studio or Fedora or Slackware. Maybe that is what this guy has done. There are still many things that Linux cant do.....lets see what Chandrasekhar can!

Dear ashg, the first question I must ask you is whether Knoppix has an Indian developer? The answer is No. Does it hurt you to give an Indian a little push and encouragement for starting something so that he may achieve greater glory later in life? Or are you one of those Indians who achieve happiness in pulling your countryman's legs so that his aspirational flame should be extinguished. I wish people would respond to my question right here.

These sort of news put our country's name in shame. If the guy has built a OS from scratch that would be something commendable. These kind of stuff are now high school projects. We have built so many like this on the fly linux. All u have to do is install linux, install the programs of your choice like Wine in this case and make an bootable iso image and import them to storage media, the whole thing will take less than 2hrs. If he is a school kid may be we can appreciate him for learning some tricks, since he is 20+ years old and matured, I could classify it as a cheat. There is nothing wrong in what Nico Rosberg says, he is just telling the truth.

How many idiots you see doing this everyday worldwide? This guy uses Open Source...meaning he will ammount to nothing. Absolutely Nothing. Unless he coded his own OS & patented it. That would be earth shattering. All he will do is garner little press time & vanish into the air with time. Simple as that.

You here seem to be real idiot using such words for a young guy willing to do something different from the ordinary and sharing it for the greater common good. Did you not know that Linus Torwalds was also such a young man at one point of time and created Linux for his hobby. See how Linux has grown today. If you cannot do anything worthwhile, don't be so negative about others

Is it possible to get any screen shots or any videos of successful experiment? From text it's hard to see the height of the achievement.
