Unique polymer-like coating promises to protect electronics from exposure to dust, oil, dirt and moisture.
Everyone would like to save gadgets from moisture and water spills. Cheap plastic pouches or scratch pads can protect the gadget's screens, but not the rest of the body. To address this need, a solution called Golden Shellback coating has been developed by the engineering group of Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI), a mariners' education facility in Fairhaven, MA USA. It was featured in Revision 3's online Tech Show - Tekzilla. Golden Shellback is a unique polymer-like coating that promises to protect electronics and operational equipments from exposure to synthetic liquids, oils, dust, dirt and moist environments.
Weather and water are two external factors that affect the gadgets, phones and other electronics. Visually transparent, the Golden Shellback coating is applied in vacuum so that it creates a kind of a film on the inner as well as outer surface of the gadget. The coating is non-flammable and carries waterproofing, anti-corrosion properties and is insoluble in common solvents. However, repairs of the coated surfaces require usage of abrasive method to get rid of coating.
Patrick Norman, Tekzilla's presenter, tried checking this by shooting footage of cell phones and CB radios operating imperfectly under water!
