Latest batch of iTunes updates issued to Windows iTunes lists Safari as a program requiring updates regardless of it being installed.
In a decision that has all the makings of turning into a controversy, Apple s Safari browser will now be riding piggyback on iTunes updates. The latest batch of iTunes updates issued to Windows iTunes users via Apple Software Update, lists Safari as a program requiring updates regardless of whether it s installed or not.
Among those who aren t amused by Apple s decision include Mozilla CEO John Lilly who said that users would now have to opt out of its installation during an otherwise routine upgrade to iTunes.
Apple pushing Safari on users who may not understand what they re doing undermines the trust relationship great companies have with their customers, Lilly remarked.
This is bad not just for Apple, but for the security of the whole Web, he added.
Considering that Apple software update (iTunes and QuickTime) gets automatically installed On Windows machines, it is quite likely that Safari has already been offered to millions of users over the past week.
Lilly further said that Apple had made it incredibly easy for users to install software that they didn t ask for, and maybe didn t want. This is wrong, and borders on malware distribution practices, he claimed.
