The company has reportedly opened a new office at Seattle to work closely with the Windows Mobile Team

Motorola has rebuffed reports that it is planning to abandon the Windows Mobile in favor of Google's Android for its future smart phones.

It was last week that the story broke that Motorola was laying off as much as 50% of its staff in its handset department. Along with this came reports that the company was planning to shift to Google's Android exclusively for its future range of smart phones; this news was thought to ring the the death-knell for Windows Mobile based Motorola handsets.

However, in an interview with ComputerWorld.com, a senior executive from the company has allayed fears about it ditching Windows Mobile. Brian Viscount, the Vice President of Marketing for Mobile Enterprise Computing at Motorola confirmed that the company has no plans to dump Windows Mobile, and that it is "100 percent committed to Windows Mobile."

While Motorola's Windows Mobile based handsets like the Motorola Q and the Q9 have not exactly set the sales chart on fire in the past, they were considered good devices nevertheless. For the same reason, there might be a small group of admirers out there rejoicing on hearing this news. Apart from this, the company has also reportedly opened a new office at Seattle, just to work closely with the Windows Mobile Team. Hence, ditching Windows Mobile after such a significant investment wouldn't seem a wise move.

We can only hope that the manufacturer battles out 2009 with a rejuvenated line-up of devices to help it regain its lost glory.
