Board says cell phones are a 'serious cause of distraction'

Parents of kids who study in Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools will be relieved to know that the cell phone bills will decrease a bit. That's because the students of CBSE schools will not be allowed to use cell phones when in school campus. What more, this might just help them concentrate on their curriculum better.

In fact, the restriction has been imposed on use of cell phones by anyone on school campus, be it students, teachers, or any other working staff. The purpose of this move is to recreate the good old cellular phone-free, distraction less environment in educational institutions.

The CBSE Board explains its decision pertaining to cell phones having become a ''serious cause of distraction, lack of concentration, anxiety, fear and sometimes even misuse.  Even if the mobiles are in silent mode, they can be a source of disturbance within the classroom as students can make use of Short Messaging Service (SMS) during the class or even during an assignment.  The cameras which are a common feature now in most mobile phones can also be misused.''

However, the circular clarifies that the school authorities may provide land line telephone/s from where the teachers and students can make calls in need and emergency, if necessary.  There could be a centralized system of receiving and recording calls for teachers and students of the school.

Shouldn't other state boards of education take a cue from this move and adopt similar strict bans on the new generation distractions in schools?

It's really a great decision and not only CBSE but Schools, Colleges and other Educational Institutions in the nation should follow this move. Today Cell Phones ( especially handsets with multimedia features ) in hands of Studying Childrens is really a point of great concern and a major threat to our younger generations only because of the misuse associated with it.

This is a good move. School is a place to learn as much from the libraries, teachers and mentors. Cellphone is DEFINITELY an attractive distraction. But I also feel that schools should provide systems and mechanisms to identify, track student whenever there is a need and emergency. That will keep parents know the whereabouts of their kids as and when necessary. These are being implemented in many forward looking schools.

Mobile phones help people to stay in touch with kids while they are on the way to school and back too. No school can take full responsibility for the safety for everyone studying irrespective of the syllabus and central body involved. Kids should be taught to keep phones on silent or switched off while attending classes. This etiquette is lacking in the workplace and at many public places. India has become noisy and distracting. (Vehicle horns, engines, people shouting on phones, mobile tones, reverse horns and more ...) There is a larger issue that is definitely being neglected here. If schools believe that children cannot be taught how to avoid using cell phones during class, I do not know how they are confident about teaching anything else.

Abhijit, Listen carefully, u might want your kids learn all these things at school but not evry 1 and school kids having a phone is not a good idea atelast in the school premises, what they can come home and learn about a cell phone or whatever, it is a very good idea of banning, they should only get these when they are atleast in their college or later will do,

Why/how is it not a good idea to have mobile phones in schools? Today what u call a mobile phone is turning into an all purpose computing device. Mobile technology is going to be ubiquitous in the future and a platform for education. So why BAN it instead of embracing it and using it properly? Banning will just make things worse. Kids need to be taught discretion; that everything in the world has it's place and time. Anyway today's schools are pathetic, they cannot teach basics to kids properly so how can we expect them to teach them anything else? Besides is it the job of schools to teach everything? Can't parents also play a positive role and spend some time with their kids to teach them MANNERS? Adults are just no better! So what kind of education are kids getting these days then? Think about it. The education system is going for a toss thanks to such short sighted thinking.

So what happens when these kids go to work? Like the previous commenter said, kids ought to be taught cell-phone etiquette and THESE etiquettes ought to be enforced. Banning phones is a very uncool way of going about this.

Oh god! How can you guys support such a move? Such measures shows a short sighted immature mentality of dealing with a situation. Extreme action doesn't solve the problem at all; it just makes it worse. How about EDUCATING STUDENTS on mobile phone ETIQUETTES? Students should be taught how to USE TECHNOLOGY PROPERLY.
