Mobile Handset Users Unsatisfied

Techtree News Staff, Oct 18, 2007 1419 hrs IST

According to Mobile Handset Usage and Satisfaction 2007 by IDC, the overall satisfaction score of mobile handset users has declined for the first time in 3 years.

A study on the India Mobile Handset Usage and Satisfaction 2007 by International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that the overall satisfaction score of mobile handset users has declined for the first time in 3 years.

Three companies that managed to remain above the industry average (in order of user satisfaction) are Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia.

Motorola has also emerged as the most improved brand on satisfaction consistently over the last 3 years.

Meanwhile, mobile handset users opine that mobile phones have become easier to use.

Also, phones now have better voice clarity and longer battery life. Therefore, the satisfaction on these 3 parameters has increased as compared to 2006 and 2005.

However, there are 2 parameters on which satisfaction has come down significantly: internal memory and entertainment.

The IDC study pointed out that 3 main entertainment features -- integrated digital camera, music player, and stereo FM radio -- typically drive users to upgrade their handsets. These features have been available in mid- and high-end handsets; but now, there's a demand for these features in even the more affordable handsets.

According to Shailendra Gupta, senior manager (Consumer Research) of IDC India, the average price paid for the current handset by the typical Indian mobile user is Rs.3,700. And the "incremental spend" for the next handset is roughly Rs.3,200, which means that the user is willing to spend Rs.6,900 for their next handset. Significantly, this price point has declined in the past 3 years.

The study indicates that typically, a mobile handset is used for 56 minutes a day for voice communication -- an increase of 5 minutes over the 51 minutes per day a year ago.

In addition, SMS usage has continued to increase in last 3 years. Today, the average SMS user sends 8 SMSes a day. This overall increase in SMS usage can be attributed to tariff charges and widespread usage of SMS by TV shows' public opinion polls -- which has been increasing year-on-year.

Hi it is an good thing that we are talking about the product which become a necessity for every one & for every time. so the manufacturer has to go in deep study of what they have to produce because in todays world all the market is based on customer need. I have been using cell phone from last 6 yrs & i have used almost all brands mobile sets but the best features i found is in NOKIA only, because there are the some features which no other manufaturer provides. But i always find the problem with the service provider they always create confusion for customer, they always talk about this much of sms is free, this much of call are free but infact nothing is free each & every thing is paid by customer which if statigicaly planned & played with customer. If any service provider(IDEA, MTNL) is providing every thing at very less cost but in that case its service is very poor. so the conclusion is peoples are not satisfy......................

Hi, you are talking about Mobile Phones. It's good thing that people know what exactly they want. However, the thing that is having worst effect on people in daily basis is the Mobile service providers charges. They play lot of gimmicks by different confusing offers to public. Let the public also play their game now. What I suggest is that (any particular group, like Muslims, generally who used to do vote for one single party in politics, should use the same tactics, and by this way -going for one particular service provider, say Vodaphone or Reliance, could make them cut their tariffs to a great extent and offer good service. And also, suppose you have in your community, same service provider, then due to this, as they provide cheap rates within their users, you have again benefits of lesser call charges... That means we have to go for one particular service provider, in our community, students circle, members of club, society etc. so that you can talk more for less and the telephone companies will not play such gimmicks that is happening now.
