MobileAdda brings mobile connectivity to users of BigAdda, which aims to be India's #1 social networking site. Will this new service change its fortunes?
What's common to Cloob, Mixi, Grono, iWiW, and Biip? These are country-specific social networking sites in Iran, Japan, Poland, Hungary, and Norway that have more members in their respective countries than than global networking sites like Facebook, Orkut, and MySpace. This is in sharp contrast to India, but that could very well change, if BigAdda has its way. The homegrown social networking site has big plans to socialize its way to become the number one 'local' social networking site in India.
To get closer to this target, BigAdda has gone mobile with MobileAdda. With this million dollar plus campaign, the website's members will be able to stay in touch with other members through SMS, WAP, and a Mobile Application, apart from the full-fledged website.
Launched in August last year, the Reliance ADAG-owned BigAdda focuses on its Indian factor. It strives to feature local content and has gradually upgraded itself from being just a text and multimedia sharing site. The website introduced an Amitabh Bachchan blog, called the BIGBlog and also later adopted Web 2.0 make itself rich, user-friendly, and interactive.
With the introduction of MobileAdda, BigAdda is targeting users who cannot use a comp all day to connect with other BigAdda members. Members will be able to stay connected to their friends at BigAdda through SMS, where they will be charged per SMS, according to the data plan they've chosen through their mobile service provider.
Also, with GPRS connectivity, members will be able to access the modified, light, and clutter-free mobile version of the BigAdda website to use most of the features that can be accessed through a computer. BigAdda's mobile application will be accessible on almost 500 handsets in India.

BigAdda claims to have a growing user base of 2.5 million registered users, and around 1.3 million views per day, which includes 10-12,000 unique visitors everyday. With the introduction of MobileAdda, the website is hoping to attract a chunk from the 40-50 million GPRS users in India.
With Orkut and Facebook continuing to rule social networking in India, BigAdda hopes to become the number one active social networking site in the country by continuing to strengthen its Indian content, which is its USP. On asking BigAdda representatives if they would be willing to give the desired overtake a time frame, they, quite naturally, declined to comment. Perhaps adding the facility of using regional languages will help them get there faster?
