Microsoft's Office Labs operation team is almost ready with internal social networking project prototype targeted at its business customers. It's called "TownSquare".
At the ongoing Enterprise 2.0 Conference (June 9-12) in Boston, Christ Partley, general manager of Office Labs, Microsoft, is expected to share the prototype details of Microsoft's Facebook-like internal social networking project. TownSquare shares close resemblances to Facebook like putting up photos, updating status messages, and connecting with members from other teams.
TownSquare is like an enterprise news feed; it allows users to receive news, profile updates, whereabouts, and work flow information of managers, friends, and colleagues from various teams - all in one place. The information is obtained by using Web services to query SharePoint, since it is being looked upon as a core data source for information.
These news feeds and profile updates can be customized and receivers of the same can be monitored as well. TownSquare also sends document or file modification notices to the users.
Launched in January and created on request of Office and SharePoint development teams, TownSquare has been used by more than 8000 Microsoft employees as well as some undisclosed Microsoft customers. In a talk with Computerworld, Partley stressed that TownSquare is more a technology concept testing platform than a technology product.
