On the sidelines of the launch of its larger, more illustrious cousin, Office 2010, Microsoft also announced the launch of Office Mobile 2010 - a public Beta version of the same.

Available for recently released Windows Mobile 6.5 laden devices, the application is available for download from Windows Marketplace. The application, as obvious, is a full-fledged mobile Office suite that will enable users to view, edit and share official documents, presentations and spreadsheets from right within the confines of their WinMo smartphones. The application will be available as beta till April 5, 2010 after which the Beta version will expire.

The latest version of Office Mobile is "touchscreen only" and unlike its predecessors, doesn't support non touchscreen devices. Anyway, since there aren't any non touchscreen Windows Mobile devices, the non compatibility isn't a cause of much concern. The application offers synching abilities with Microsoft OneNote as well.

Microsoft also seems to have inadvertently released a screenshot of of its next generation OS while showcasing a preview of Office Mobile 2010. The screenshot showed the office suite running in an environment that looks quite unlike the existing Windows Mobile 6.5 platform. With Windows Mobile 7 ready to be released in 2010, speculation is rife that the screenshot is obviously of Microsoft's next generation Mobile OS.
