Microsoft has unveiled a new range of peripherals that feature its first step into biometric identification on the desktop.
The new line of keyboards and mice will be Microsoft's first hardware products to feature fingerprint recognition technology. The fingerprint reader products include a wireless mouse, desktop and a standalone reader.
This biometric technology is being touted more as a convenient way of switching users, entering passwords and logging on to Web sites, than improved security. The software memorizes the passwords Web surfers have to remember to get around the Web and automatically supplies the right password, once the fingerprint reader verifies the user.
Microsoft is also revamping its Bluetooth-powered wireless mouse and keyboard to support connections to multiple devices, but customers will need to install the problematic Service Pack 2 for Windows XP to use either of them.
The wireless mouse is aimed at laptop users on the go, with a small USB receiver that packs away into the bottom of the mouse for traveling. New wired and wireless keyboards offer improved ergonomics and an adjustable slider control for zooming in and out of documents and photos.
The fingerprint reader-equipped keyboard and mouse together sell for $104, approximately Rs. 4, 800. The mouse by itself costs $84 or Rs. 3, 900 and the standalone fingerprint reader costs $64 or Rs. 3000 approximately.
