Microsoft Licenses Adobe Software

Techtree News Staff, Mar 17, 2008 1640 hrs IST

The most interesting part about licensing Adobe's software is that Microsoft already has its own video-viewing software called Silverlight.

Microsoft has licensed Adobe's Flash Lite and Reader LE softwares for its Windows Mobile operating system and browser in future versions of Microsoft Windows mobile phones.

The Flash Lite 3.x browser plug-in for Internet Explorer Mobile on Windows Mobile will provide users with access to interactive Web content created using Flash technology; while Reader LE will be useful in viewing PDF documents including email attachments and Web content on mobile devices.

Both Adobe products will be made available to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) worldwide, who license Windows Mobile software.

Flash Lite is actually an older version of Flash video player. Flash player is very prevalent on the Web, used by almost all Web sites today. Being an older version as compared to Flash, the concern is that Flash Lite may not be able to display Web sites created using Flash 9.

However, the belief is it will still play motivator in drawing more mobile users to access Web sites through their mobile phones. Until now a majority of people have been surfing the Internet on mobile phones mainly for downloading content or chatting.

John O'Rourke, general manager (Mobile Communications Business) of Microsoft, said, "People want vibrant Web experiences and access to entertainment and information anywhere, anytime. Bringing Flash Lite and Reader LE to the Windows Mobile experience will give consumers more of their favorite Web sites on the go."

The most interesting part about licensing Adobe's software is that Microsoft already has its own video-viewing software called Silverlight; essentially seen as a competitor to Adobe's Flash. And, word is Redmond is trying hard to get developers to build their Web sites using Silverlight.

Who knows, maybe Microsoft may support both Flash Lite and Silverlight on Windows Mobile phones in the end.

"Flash Lite is actually an older version of Flash video player" JEEZ technology journo's don't they make you laugh, flash is not a video player it is merely a method by which video can be delivered, flash lite is not old JEEZ it's code is actually more up to date than flash 9.
