Gone are the days when people used to steal jewelery and other valuables. Thieves also seem to have moved on with the rest of the world; they're now eyeing on gadgets such as mobile phones and laptops.
When a gadget is stolen, it is not just the physical loss but also the loss of valuable and sensitive information that it stores. So the need of the hour is a system that can be used to track stolen gadgets like mobile phones and laptops. There are some companies already offering such systems, and one of them is Micro Technologies.
Along with their existing mobile tracking system, Micro Technologies will now offer their new software product called Micro LNTS (Lost Notebook Tracking System) that can reportedly locate stolen laptops leveraging the World Wide Web.
LNTS embeds on notebook hard drives, allowing the system to be tracked as soon as it is connected to the Internet. The system not only tracks and helps recover stolen computers, but also claims to deter theft.
In order to get the software working, users need to install LNTS on the notebook where it will reside and operate in stealth mode. In the event of theft, the software silently connects with the company's monitoring centre, whenever the notebook is connected to the Internet. Users can log into their Web-based personal tracking and monitoring page through www.microlnts.net to trace where the laptop has been accessed from.
According to Dr. P. Sekhar, chairman and managing director of Micro Technologies, "LNTS is just the incidental name. It is also a manageability tool for files and folders as well as a parental control system for tracking the online activities done by children. The system can be used to keep a check on the number of hours children spend on the Internet and what kind of websites they visit."
LNTS also offers other management tools such as sending out regular emails for notebook activity, hide the documents that carry vital information, date-wise storage of data, login intimation on mobile and email, remotely monitoring of user specified URL/Document, and getting the list of installed software.
However, even though the system offers a whole lot of features, the point to be remembered is that LNTS isn't fool-proof, like most software technologies. In case thief decides to format your notebook start using it, the software will be deleted from your notebook's hard drive all together. In fact, all the tracking systems available today fail to address this concern.
Micro LNTS is available
online in 3 different models LNTS- Elite and Premium for individual users, and Micro LNTS-Corporate. The Elite model is priced at Rs. 600, while the Premium costs Rs 1500. Users will need to renew the software every year for the same or more amount to continue using it.
