Magazines Are Passe, Try Mygazines.Com

Techtree News Staff, Aug 19, 2008 1735 hrs IST

Even before the peer-to-peer sharing site could make a splash, lawsuits have started plaguing its existence.

Now those not willing to spend bucks on buying various magazines every week or month can try Mygazines.com. Launched in July this year, this site allows users to upload, browse, share, archive, and customize unlimited magazine articles.

A free-to-join site, Mygazine.com encourages users to copy and upload popular magazines. Users have a high-quality digital version of various magazines including Macworld, Time, PC World, Business Week, Economist, National Geographic Kids, Cosmopolitan, Men's Health and more. Also, users are allowed to make a collection of articles of their interest and turn them into a digital magazine.

However, now it seems that this site might soon face allegations of copyright infringement as Dawn Bridges, spokesperson for Time Warner's Time division, said they were looking into ways to have the site shut down. Even Economist said they too were considering appropriate action on the matter, reports AP.

But publishers might face some difficulty in taking legal action against Mygazines.com as the site's domain name is registered in the Caribbean island of Anguilla, a British overseas territory, and is hosted in Sweden, thus squarely outside the jurisdiction of US copyright laws.

Publishers could've take action had the company's servers been hosted in the US, or used servers physically in the US. Given that Mygazines.com has neither, they can only pursue legal action on the basis that the content on the site is available in the US, but they can't really pull the company representatives to court or claim damages.

This is not the first time a site encouraging peer-to-peer sharing is being threatened by the big corporates. Earlier in 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the file-sharing site Grokster could be held liable for the copyright violations of its users, since the site took affirmative steps to foster infringement, writes Cnet News. More recently, Pirate Bay has been in and out of trouble.
