Notion Ink has a group of dedicated Indians working to build a tablet - Adam, Apple iPad's worthy competitor. After the buzz over the web last week, the official specifications of this Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC powered device have been finalized, reports Gizmodo. The tablet, along with its official specifications, will be unveiled at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2010 at Barcelona. Notion Ink will make Adam available in June/July and will charge between range of $327-$800 (Rs. 15,700-Rs. 38,400 approx.) depending on the configuration.
In terms of specifications, Notion Ink's Adam tablet clearly weighs more than Apple iPad - except the multi-touch supporting display with IPS technology. The Adam tablet runs dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPUs bearing Nvidia Tegra 2 System-on-a-Chip while Apple iPad uses company's own A4 SoC silicon. Both SoC chips have capability of running at 1GHz clock speed.
Compared with iPad's 9.7-inch IPS LCD with 4:3 aspect ratio, Adam will come with 10-inch Transreflective LCD PixelQi screen supporting 1024x600 at the same time. Low power consuming PixelQi screen will support full color along with a Black & White mode. Apart from that, Adam's 10-inch screen is capable of displaying 1080p video playback, thanks to the Nvidia Tegra 2 which is also said to consume less power than its predecessor.
So, while iPad offers 10 hours web browsing on Wi-Fi and 8 hours of video watching experience, Notion Ink claims that Adam offers 16 hours of web browsing. The Adam also boasts of a 160 hour run time in backlighting off mode. While Apple sticks to Safari for iPad, Adam tablet will have Firefox and Chrome web browsers to support.
Adam's one of the most noteworthy part comes with multiple operating system support - Android, Ubunty and Chromium. Compared to this, Apple has iPhone OS 3.2 running on the iPad. Another significant feature the OS support on Adam is that the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support will exist for better web browsing experience. And, oh boy, the operating systems on Adam would support multi-tasking. These features could be a game changer for Adam.
For storage expansion, Adam has SD card slot while Apple sticks to SSD options with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage options. For wireless connectivity Adam again has Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth, just like in the iPad. Apart from that, the Adam has ambient light sensor, RF sensor, Assisted-GPS, proximity sensor, accelerometer and touchpad. Adam also offers HDMI and three USB ports. While iPad has no camera, the Adam tablet sports 3 megapixel auto focus camera.
Except for multi-touch and IPS LCD panel, the Adam Tablet clearly wins over the Apple iPad in every possible way when compared on specifications level. Looks like Notion Ink has put everything that isn't offered in iPad. Even on the price level, Adam has an advantage with start price of $327 (Rs. 15,700 approx.) while iPad's starting price is $499 (Rs. 24,000 approx.).
At the MWC 2010, this India-based firm will officially unveil Adam along with specifications and we expect fireworks once it is made available in June-July period.

Adam and eve are not even in the scene!
But the Apple has is already in the tree, ripe and eatable!
By the time Adam plan to eat the forbidden apple, there will be hundreds of trees full of Apples! and Adam just crumbles with thinking he has sinned!
But so many out there talking about Adam's Sin!
Plus and this is a BIG plus for the Adam - it has NO ecosystem. I think that I will rush right our and buy one and watch nothing on it. Nothing is great it occupies most of my time. I just cannot think of what I did before I had nothing to do. Perhaps I'll but one for each of my family!
You're an idiot. The Adam will have the Android, Ubuntu and Chrome OS ecosystems which together are larger than the largely crap-filled iPhone ecosystem. Notion Ink will also be adding a separate Adam App ecosystem on top just to differentiate the product and create content that is tailored for the device much like how Wired and NYT are tailoring content for the iPad that won't be available on the iPhone. Do yourself a favor and stop being a moron.
This is exactly what I wanted so consider one sold. I'm buying one.
Comparing anything with Apple brings out the fanboys and gets media attention, but it's a pointless exercise. Apple doesn't really care for consumers outside its small geographical fan base. Their products are expensive and not meant for the 'common man'.
There is huge market and need for ebook readers that are open and cost effective for college students in developing countries. If you start comparing yourself with Apple which produces designer computing products for a niche segment in advanced countries, you're chasing the wrong ball.
The real competition for Notion will be offerings from the likes of HP and Samsung. I'm really happy to see a product like this coming from India and wish you guys all the best!
Apple iPad is not going to be launched in India soon and personally I don't care for either iTunes or NYT like content. I can get all the music and books I want.
While I am glad that an Indian company is producing a less expensive one, Apple products may very well be the only ones designed for the common man. Ask any non-technical person how to manually install software or drivers, or recompile anything. No common user should ever have to do that, and for the most part, Apple products have eliminated that hassle. I don't argue that Apple products are expensive, but there is a reason for this.
to Brad Carps@ I agree with you about Apple products being usable... but me thinks there is a difference between what the 'common man' in silicon valley can afford and 'common people' in the rest of the world buy.
Which is why Nokia ships 500 million phones a year Vs. Apples 5 Million (?) iPhones.
The pixelqi technology is an innovation indeed, but Manu, you have to be completely BLIND not to see how Multi-Touch technology is the natural evolution of single point touch interfaces. It's not just for zooming in and out with two fingers. It makes typing on the screen possible by being able to hold the shift key while typing capitalized letters. Using three fingers to drag an entire graphic object to another location as opposed to using two fingers to zoom in and out or directional panning of the canvas. It makes gaming possible with some games requiring that you use two or even three fingers for specific actions and tasks. Multi-touch enables a world of potential for intuitive application control. We've only brushed the tip of the iceberg thus far, being that the technology is still only a few years old. The lack of Multi-touch is huge.
Yeah...but it's not an Apple! No doubt there'll be many tablet computers arriving now, but none will be as good as the iPad. Just like iPod spourned many mp3 competitors- none were as good as iPod! The iPad will be the best tablet available. Why? because Apple just gets it right- they make the software AND hardware, and there products are easy and great fun to use. They're track record of consistently excellent products has earned Apple my (and millions of other peoples!) loyalty. Best of luck to this company with their new tablet. But I won't be buying it..
Why? Because it not an Apple!
There seems to be a little bit of bias in this comment. Apple isn't incapable of making a mistake or a bad product, think the Apple Newton or Apple TV, they are largely considered failures. I am sure that there will be people that buy the Ipad and will be happy but for most it won't be because it is a good product, it will be because it is an apple and they believe so hard that apple can't make a bad product that they will refuse to see anything bad in it. In the tech world loyalty is not something that you should give to any product simply based on the company name, that is how bad products become a success and hold back truly good products from getting good market penetration.
Feature-to-feature comparisons have been made with iPhone and other smart phones. And there are many phones that are superior in some form or the other (more pixel in camera, flash etc) but no one puts it all together than Apple. While Adam may have better features in one category or the other it is wrong to compare it with an iPad. Adam is a tablet PC. iPad is not. The real game changer with an iPad will be the tailor made content - of which we don't know enough yet. The likes of NYT & Wired will have custom content for iPad which makes optimal use of iPad and not just present their current website in a smaller screen. Not to mention the other apps. Just as with iPhone the ease of use across apps & features will be a big plus for the iPad.
I agree with you Nicholas but we cannot deny other companies have tried to put up competition, lets not compare the 2 (iPad and Adam) but just take it as another tablet. As Sony Ericsson never killed Nokia's market, Notion Ink, the same way cannot kill or take any thing from Apple. Apple Fans will always be buying Apple Products, they've got a different market
1) The Adam will have multitouch support. It supports it in the hardware, and Android can support multitouch in the software.
2) Pixel Qi vs IPS: This is actually a clear winner for the Adam. Backlit or self lit panels, such as any LCD panel (TN, PVA, IPS, etc) or OLED screen actually causes eye strain while reading. Being able to turn off the backlight on the Pixel Qi screen makes it a far superior reading device.
As for color accuracy, etc, yes, IPS panels are superior. But the average consumer won't notice much of a difference from a TN panel and an IPS panel. IPS panels are also significantly more expensive than their TN and PVA brothers. I care about extreme color accuracy on my workstation monitor for when I'm in Photoshop - not when I'm surfing the web at Chili's while waiting for my food, or while I'm riding the subway.
3) As for a lack of an ecosystem - The Adam runs Android, which has a large app store and community of its own. Most of the "big" apps - Things like Pandora, Shazam, turn by turn navigation, Facebook, IM clients, etc, all exist in the Android Market. It is small in comparison to the App store, but much of what exists in the app store is "junk".
With the ability to run Chromium coming, and nvidia working closely with the Linux community to get a linux distro working on the ARM based Tegra 2, the Adam will be one of the most open and developer friendly tablets on the market.
4) As for the Apple A4 - It's simply a Cortex A9 multicore chip with a 3rd party GPU solution. The Tegra is also a Cortex A9 multicore chip, but it uses their own GPU solution.
Notion Ink has a product to be proud of, and there's every eason to believe they can compete with Apple for a fair portion of the market, assuming it can be advertised and marketed properly.
This is crap, first of all Adam tablet not in the market, no one outside ever used it, the title of the article sounds like a big failure sure for this yet to see device. Be clear on what you're going to write before making such immature titles.
Nobody is killing anybody. Stop with the hype until the thing is actually released and used by people who did not work on it.
And what kind of rubbish is $327-$800 range. Are they going to just give you the case for $327? If it's going to cost $800 with all the features that are being advertised, then it is DOA.
I can't tell if this article is a troll or not.
Framing the debate as being about features entirely misses the appeal of the iPad. The Zune has more features than the iPod; according to this logic, they should have close to the same market share. In reality, that's not even close to the case.
The appeal of the iPad is that it isn't a computer. Computers are terrible, frightening contraptions that only geeks understand. Don't believe me? Ask grandma about recompiling their OS or how to remove a rootkit. Average users don't care about that crap, and Apple is capitalizing on this while everyone else worries about copying but not being too radical.
To compete in this economy, you have to differentiate yourself from your competitors or do what your competition does, better, and convincingly enough that users will switch. Thus far, neither seems to be the case.
Finally, no one cares about Flash unless you play games. It's a passing fad for user interfaces and streaming video. Remember Java video players?
depends on what is "average" and in which part of the world? (I think most folks now demand more and are not scared of computers but rather way curious to explore more)
"average" is very relative to where and when and clearly Adam seems to have cut acrossed the upper limits of "average" considered anywhere and lower bounds of price...
a simple offering v/s price double advantage
You have distorted version of the world my friend.
<br/>
Agreed apple sells well in US (which I guess where you are from) but in other countries apple is not much of a player or is counted as one among many only. The average US customer is happy with Apple products and will remain so, doesn't mean that it will sell outside of US also.
I don't think Adam will kill the IPad in US, but outside it may be a different story altogether.
just my 2 cents
How about the apps? I believe one differentiator the iPhone scores over the competetion is the App store. Would this be applicable for iPad too? If so, letting users world-over come up with their own apps and providing a store for those apps would be a sure winner for Adam. Love you guys.. Wishing you good luck.
ADAM looks very exciting and its Indian company so I'm goan buy this as it has more features. And i want wish good luck to Notion Ink company keep inovating
Apple, apple, apple. Too much of it everywhere.
Well, first, let me admire Steve Jobs for his incredible vision in bringing something new. But being in the technology, nothing just raises my eye brow except their marketing strategy.
What is so special about an ipod? Sony had thought about music on move in 80's, when you and me were still kids. Silicon was shrinking everytime, and putting a music player into small memory chip isnt great invention. Its a clear cut r&d, and a new idea infact. I appreciate apple for new way of music listening.
Iphone came next. What is so special about it? Motorola invented communications in 80's. We had so many phones already in market. Apple mixed phone + their video player. A great idea again. But do many of apple die hard fans here know which OS apple runs? The footprint of that OS in apple Iphone is almost 700MB ! Thats a huge silicon area. Do you know who is paying for it? You. Apple is not giving that memory area for free. With such a huge OS footprint, anyone can have a lousy graphics. They didnt do it in say 3 MB kernel like a Linux (Android) + 50MB filesystem.
Next iPod. whats so special about it? Amazon had kindle. Again Steve jobs saw his phone and music market is stabilising. He has to show growth to his share holders. He created this product, which for people like me is useless. We need a laptop, as it has computing power, and I code. I need a compiler on my handheld always.
Whatever products Apple may bring out, they are all NICE TO HAVE ideas. They are infact luxuries. They are not solving the problems of common man in anyways. The day they come up with gadget to rescue a human life in crisis, I will appreciate them. Else whats use of such luxuries when you are dying?
I am very proud to have a product like Adams to challenge the steve job's Ipad . Its all matter about the quality. Not based on which company produce. still awating for lot of new products.
I see some rediculous comments from the readers. Give a break. iPad is just an oversized iTouch. We should accept that in 2010 you can't support multi touch then how can anyone rate you as the best gadget maker.
It is nice to see someone coming up with sensible stuff. No offense meant but I think Mr. Jobs might loose on the 'pad' bet
A product does not sell only on features agreed. But it cannot survive only on quality. Look at the Apple IPOD. It did not have FM Radio, voice recorder and camera in it till each and every device was having.
If the Adam can be just a slight bit significant on quality, i am sure Apple will get a run for its money. Tell me how many of people out there would like to connect their IPOD to IPAD and transfer the music or watch your videios on the large screen using HDMI. And just think that for IPAD you need to shell our $160 more and miss them.
Are they flipping mad? The Adam has NO multi-touch! It's like making fruit punch without sugar! I don't want to even try using a touch based tablet without the natural convenience of being able to use all my fingers. The lack of an IPS screen?!? These two things aren't just minor absences, these are two things that DRASTICALLY changes the entire experience! Of course I'm going to stick with an iPad.
there will be multi touch, but it didn't come into the software feature yet. You can find a you-tube video from CES where Rohan (director of notion ink) said so.they are yet to finalize the software ,which would be over by april.
So keep your views till the actual specs come out.
btw if you notices onething about apple
from wiki describes macOSX as as (closed source using open-source components)
thats how you make money out of nothing..
Whichever touch screen device comes today, its referred to as an iPhone(in this case iPad) killer but the fact remains that the UI and Touch screens Apple provides are unbeatable and at the end of the day, you can't just start working on any screen just 'cos its got certain "features or ports" extra! The thing you work on is more important no multi-touch= hassles with touchscreen=bad user experience=less efficiency.
Those who cry about multi touch and IPS screen , PLEASE just go and buy an IPad , no one is stopping you. Just dont brag about it as if everyones life depended on it.
By the way did you guys check out the camera on this thing, it has a 3 Mp SWIVELING camera, and also the Trackpad is on the bottom !!!
Also do you know it has 3 USB ports, now ask why?? cos you can plug in a USB mouse and key board if needed. Then there is Ubuntu on it and also a HDMI port. Am sold already.
To think all this could have been conjured up by an Indian company gets me more excited and I bet it would be damn cheaper the the %$#$Pad :P
Please see the original video (I think at Economic times) or the article at gizmodo before you pass a judgement.
For the apple fans crying foul over the lack of an IPS screen all I can say is that how many of you have actually seen an IPS panel? And how many of you do not know about the problems that apple quality control is not able to well.. control?
More importantly, read up about the PixelQi display technology. It combines e-ink with the common display technologies and makes it convenient for both reading and using it for day-to-day computing. A wonder innovation by itself, the ipad isn't in the same league at all.
About the multitouch part.. LOL! Its a gimmick and if you are serious about your work (zooming into photos is not the biggest priority of any serious person) then you'll be served in vastly better fashion by this device.
Finally, this information should have been provided by the one posting this bit of news. Another fail by techtree. You missed out on explaining the worthiness of the most important feature on this device, the Pixeqi technology.
Manu, an Apple product is an Apple product, you can shout as much as you want to, but it is revolutionary and even the die hard baters will admit to that. Now about the Adam, it is the first tablet PC produced by an Indian company. My best wishes extend out to the guys who built it, for they have tread the path no one else in India would. Whether it matches the iPad or not I don't care. As it is the first shot at producing a product where others Indians don't dare to tread it will live in history. My only request to the guys who built this is, not to let it go the Simputer way. Market it, enhance it, build upon it, and take it to new heights. All the best.
The lack of Multi-touch is huge.
its really coooooool ..its specification are really very very nice and the multi os support ,i just loved it.
i am just thinking, that it could come according to my pocket . the 15000-20000 its ok......
