MTNL Debuts Mobile TV, Slashes Broadband Rates

MTNL Debuts Mobile TV, Slashes Broadband Rates

Techtree News Staff, Aug 14, 2008 1740 hrs IST

Apart from launching Mobile TV, MTNL also reduced broadband rates by up to 50 per cent and announced a new mobile phone security measure

In separate announcements, MTNL has launched a new mobile phone security measure, a reduction in broadband rates, and introduction of Mobile TV.

MTNL's mobile security initiative comes in the form of Micro LMTS (Lost Mobile Tracking System). MTNL subscribers across Delhi and NCR regions can avail this service by paying Rs. 30 per month.

A product of Micro Technologies, this tie-up will make it easy and cost-effective for MTNL subscribers to secure their mobile handsets. The software works on GSM technology, so if your phone is stolen after this software has been installed, it will attempt alert the original owner of the phone in case the SIM card is replaced. The owner will be given details regarding the current number and location through an SMS or e-mail alert.

Sounds really cool! But what if the thief decides to format your phone first and then install the new SIM?

Moreover, the SIM card inserted should either have sufficient balance to be able to send the SMS alert in the first place. A data connection to send the e-mail is far fetched - considering the fact that very few subscribers have GPRS enabled, which is needed to send the e-mail. The application is compatible with some older Series 60 handsets and the newer Series 60 third edition phones.

In an unrelated announcement, MTNL has reduced existing broadband rates by as much as 50% for subscribers in Delhi.

MTNL has also introduced its new Mobile TV service, subscribers can watch as many as 20 television channels on their phones. This service comes at a rental of Rs.99 a month.

The reduction announced is for subscribers in Delhi only or Mumbai also? If not why the discrepancy? Any reason? The broadband connections are not easily available when required. It is the responsibility of the telecom providers to make it available at cheap rates with reliability as in US.

I am happy to hear about the reduction in tariff rates but still; the cost of broadband access is extremely high. I regularly visit U.K. where they charge around Rs. 1400/month for an 8 mbps connection!

BSNL are you listening? I'm paying ridiculously high price for the connection and speeds here compared to the US. Oh also, broadband here comes with pathetic customer service and reliability for the price I pay,

Broadband prices needs to be revised all over India by all ISP's as its too high to get a decent internet connection under Rs 500.
