The latest reports say that a dude who goes under the name, "MysVidel" has managed to get the Linux operating system up and alive on Microsoft's Zune.

On a forum post, "MysVidel" says he has been working on the "Zune Linux" for quite some time now despite all the bugs, and that presently, his "Zune Linux" has only limited capabilities; for instance it has to be booted while synced. However, "MysVidel" expresses happiness at having got the "Zune Linux" working at least part way. He says, hopefully, he will be able to get his "Zune Linux" released before the competition beats him to it.

As for competitors, sources reveal there has been no dearth of them as the debate on whether Linux can be gotten to work on Zune has been quite a long standing one. The bone of contention seems to be Zune's use of the Freescale iMX31L processor that is capable of running the Linux operating system.

Those who think the Zune might just be able to run Linux, argue that while Freescale iMX31L sports a Linux board support package (BSP), getting the BSP to work on the Zune is a completely different ball game. Others who dismiss the possibility say why should users want to put a whole operating system on the Zune when just a Linux kernel is sufficient to communicate with the hardware and iPod-like light intuitive interface of the device.

However, what both soothsayers and naysayers are in agreement about is - the immense possibilities of a Linux on Zune.

All along, enthusiasts have been saying that with Linux on Zune, one can get all the features one normally expects - but with all the freedom that one wants.

Meaning, things like surfing the Internet, playing any audio/video type, FM radio recording, etc, are all possible with a Linux on Zune.

And, it seems, "MysVidel" is the one to fulfil all these dreams...

Commenting on "Zune Linux", "MysVidel" says that Linux on Zune will be 'plain sexy', and that it will allow users to add their own new features and programs. He says it will give people more options instead of just what Microsoft wants, and will transform the Zune into a portable HD.

"MysVidel" further says that "Zune Linux" will give Anti Windows people something to grin about, and that with it, people will be able to update the Linux OS to suit other people's needs besides their own.
