Latest Muse: Owning VIP Numbers?

Latest Muse: Owning VIP Numbers?

Techtree News Staff, Jul 27, 2007 1659 hrs IST

Apparently, even by Ludhiana standards, this is a slightly over-the-top proposition. Nevertheless, the move has catapulted Amit to VVIP status overnight.

The latest status symbol might well be -- owning a VIP cell phone number...

If reports are to be believed, 26-year-old Amit Malhotra from Ludhiana, son of a city garment manufacturer and property dealer, spent a whopping Rs 15.50 lakhs for the big-ticket mobile number 9780000000.

Apparently, even by Ludhiana standards, this is a slightly over-the-top proposition. Nevertheless, the move has catapulted Amit to VVIP status overnight.

His father, Vijay Malhotra, was quoted as saying that this isn't something new for his son, and that he has always chosen VIP numbers as belongings. Just that this time round, he's blown up a huge amount of money on it...

Meanwhile, an unfazed Amit admitted that he borrowed money from friends and relatives so that he could buy the number but that he would repay them soon.

All said, while a part of India that is seen as rich and fat might pride itself on this kind of obscenely ostentatious spending, what about the phone company -- in this case Hutch -- which actually conducted an auction of the VIP cell phone numbers?

Amit, who had previously applied for such a number; went through a phone auction that lasted from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening, and haggled alongside 4 other eager customers to eventually seal the big win.

No surprise then that no more details -- either about the auction, or the bidders, or the bid amounts are known yet...

Hi, I read all the opinions written here. Tell me frankly one thing friends.. when you spend your own money on any thing do?. you think it's worth it from others perspective ? For some of the people purchasing costly bikes or wrist-watches is passion, and people go for it if they have money else they dream to have it. I knew so many people spending lot of money on liquor and bar-girls it's their wish and their money. Who we are to blame them. This chap has spent money on a VIP Number what's so bad thing about it. It might have given him satisfaction happiness. Just imagine... if he would have spent the same money on DAARU (liquor) and Ladaki (bar-girls)... have you people mind...? One of my friend has purchased a foreign made bike for couple of lacks. He is not even from financially well to do family and he hardly earns 12000 a month. We used to make fun of his madness. But when actually you speak to him about his bike you could find the joy and satisfaction on is face for being a proud owner of his dream bike. Friends ! I am not favoring him here? I feel if someone is spending his own money without hurting others to make himself happy and satisfied then he should be given that freedom.

Such people should be arrested. When so many poor Indians are committing suicide due to the lack of money and food, people should donate money that they have in excess instead of giving it to multinationals.

WTF, then you must support communism. you cant arrest anyone just coz he/she is not into a social cause. this feeling comes from inside, cant be forced.

I think there is nothing wrong that any one spend huge money for this no, or same kind of this one. If they have money for spend their won money they right to spend but in this same case goverment sould panlety them the same money should be donate.

why he should be arrested?? why not amar singh?? why not mulayam singh?? why not beureocrats?? he came into limelight, thats something unbearable, we know which country we belongs to, either we are proud or we are shameful most of the times, needless to say..what we expect from the government, from the people, from the spitting everywhere citizens, from the abusing-on-road people,.........everybody is responsible, for its cause of concern........

This guy who bought the number is not a "bada guy". May be some galli ka realtor or politician. He was seen on TV in Tata Indigo, whichis approx half te price hepaid for that number.

They are enemies of the society and must be prosecuted including the service provider and auctioner for charging uch a whopping amount.

by Anonymous, K, on Jul 28, 2007 12:22 AM, Report abuse   Reply

why should a person be prosecuted for spending money on a luxury? Why not arrest and shoot all the pollititians who are the true enemies of our nation?

This can't be supported under any viewpoint in a country like India where millions are starved!!! Shame on the creature who wasted so much of money just for a damn number! Can't believe it, truly they should be hanged. Had it been some hard earned money, he couldn't have wasted it like that!
