Apple Computer made headlines with its recent release of iPhone. Now LG intends to take some of the attention away... Yesterday, LG Electronics (Korea), along with world-renowned fashion label, Prada, announced a new mobile phone, which sports a buttonless, touch-screen interface very much like that of Apple's iPhone. The LG Prada Phone, alias the KE850, features a no-button interface with the entire phone face covered by a touch-sensitive screen. Like the iPhone, this phone too, is super-thin; it's just 12 millimetres thick, which is only about 0.4 millimetres thicker than the iPhone. Also like the iPhone, the LG Prada Phone can play most popular digital music/video formats, and has a two mega pixels camera. However, unlike the iPhone, the LG phone's memory can be expanded with the help of cards. Other features of this new phone include: MP3 player, video player, document viewer, music/messaging multitasking capability, Bluetooth, and USB 2.0 port. Besides, the phone will ship with accessories and a leather case, all jointly designed by LG and Prada. The LG Prada Phone will likely hit mobile phone dealers and Prada stores in Britain, France, Germany, and Italy in late Feb. The phone will be priced at approximately $780 (Rs 35,100). In Asia, it will be available sometime in March this year. Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone will release in the US in June, and will carry a price tag of around $599 (Rs 26,955). The iPhone will launch in other markets later this year as well as in 2008.

How is it "me too" when LG is first to market with this phone? Apple has announced vapourware. LG rules. I note also that iRiver, another Korean company, was first with a touchscreen mp3 player (the Clik) last year. Let's not forget, it was the Koreans who invented the first digital mp3 player way back in 1996 with the EMP3Man.

Does anyone else see the flaw in Andrews agrument? He actually thinks that LG knew nothing about the iPhone before Jobs recent announcement. Educate yourself before you make comments that make you sound like a fool. The Apple iPhone has been one of the most anticipated products in consumer electronics history for well over a year. I've got news for you, LG and just about every other consumer electronics company has been working on a product to compete for some time.

looks to be a cheap copycat job with a prada logo. typical korean thing i suppose. by placing a fashion brand logo on a stolen idea doesn't immediately make you into a design house or a high end brand. why is the screen so narrow but yet so long? how effectively can you utilize a screen like that for viewing docs or movies? i feel sorry for prada now that they are at the level of a cheap korean brand.

Reality check here. Apple launched the i phone a little over a week ago. do you seriously think LG would of copied Apple's design, features, specs and to top that off manufactured all the cell phones to sell on the maket (next month)in a matter of one week?? Even Apple is not ready to sell the i phone till around June. Manufacturing and design doesn't work that way my friend. I think apple stole some of the thunder of LG by announcing the i phone one week ahead of LG's announcement. I think it's a bit unfair to LG that Prada phone is sometimes refered to as a I-phone copy cat by the press and ignoramus like Allen just beacuse Mac annouced their phone one week early. Remember touch screen phone that uses stylus instead of fingers have been around for a long time and i-phone and LG touch screen phones are just refinement of those. Regarding Lebeling Korean brand as cheap, people should remember that even as recent as 1970's, Japanese brands were considered junk. Korean electronics were cheap knock off at one time like Japanese brands. Unless you've been living in a sheltered life in North America, Korean electronics are considered high quality up there with Japanese brands and it's reconginzed all over Asia and Europe. My friends who served in the military stationed in Korea told me, cell phone technology in S. Korea is years ahead of anything offered here in North America. Andy
