Kodak Develops New Image Sensor

The KAC-05020 image sensor, touted as the world's first 1.4 microns, 5 mega pixels device, promises a new level of resolution in small optical formats.
Kodak has developed a new image sensor that promises considerable improvement in camera performance as well as picture and video quality.
The KAC-05020 image sensor, touted as the world's first 1.4 microns, 5 mega pixels device, promises a new level of resolution in small optical formats, using significantly smaller pixels.
Kodak claims that unlike other small pixel sensors that produce poor images especially in low light conditions, the KAC-05020 provides image quality that equals or surpasses that of images taken using current devices that use 1.75 microns or larger pixel CMOS designs.
According to Kodak, the key to the performance of the new sensor is the Kodak Truesense CMOS pixel, which is a re-engineering of the fundamental design and architecture of traditional CMOS pixels. Truesense also enhances the light sensitivity in the new image sensor.
At 5 million pixels, the KAC-05020 promises the highest resolution available in the popular 1/4-inch optical format, enabling imagery up to ISO 3200, and support for full 720p video at 30 fps.
The key benefits of the new sensor, according to Kodak, are high performance under low light conditions and superior video performance. The sensor can be used in smaller and thinner camera phones.
Kodak plans to provide samples of its new image sensor to camera manufacturers in Q2 2008, while chips are expected to get integrated in upgraded cameras within a year or so.
Kodak will give a demo of its KAC-05020 image sensor at the GSMA Mobile World Congress to be held between Feb 11 and Feb 14 in Barcelona in Spain.
