John Carmack: Quake MMO? No Way!

John Carmack: Quake MMO? No Way!

Techtree News Staff, Aug 06, 2008 1745 hrs IST

Carmack categorically stated that iD had no interest in MMO development, as it involves a lot of effort and may not translate into profits.

After the QuakeCon 2008, iD software's John Carmack was 'chased' by game publishers with proposals for Quake's Massively Multiplayer Online version development. Carmack categorically stated, "iD has no interest in MMO development." He added that he was aware of the challenges and risks ahead for creating MMO version, being familiar with the technology himself.

Currently, iD Software's focus is entirely on the upcoming Quake III Arena port Quake Live. In an interview with Shacknews, Carmack said that MMO development required a "significant effort" from iD software and that the company lacked experience with Internet databases, website development and database management.

So why does iD Software reject proposals from game publishers? Well, MMO certainly does involve lot of effort, which may not necessarily translate into money minting.

Let's wait and watch what iD has in store for the online world.
