It's Vodafone Bringing Apple iPhone to India
Techtree News Staff Email Print
May 6, 2008
It's official now! Apple and Vodafone have penned a deal to sell the Apple iPhone in ten countries around the world including India.

As per latest reports, Vodafone will begin selling the Apple iPhone as early as later this year. Earlier, a leading business daily had quoted unnamed sources at Apple retail saying that the iPhone is expected to launch in India in the first week of September 2008. The report had said that initially only the 8GB version would be launched for somewhere around Rs 28,000 with the 16GB version expected to follow suit later.

Meanwhile, countries apart from India that would benefit from the Apple-Vodafone deal include: the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa, and Turkey.

That is ridiculous, Apple should not deal with an operator to sell its products. And the cost is a bomb on the pocket, you can get a 16gb version for less, 20k ($499). Why do companies tie up ?????? If this is true I will not buy Iphone in India...!!!

Hi folks... relax... These news are just to create a hype. Apple has already done a good study of Indain market. Wait and watch the situation. Iam sure, they will sell the product for an amount less than 15K and it further they will be forced to open it for all the operators . Do you think that Apple will gamble with a critical market like India by not supporting the biggies like Airtel,Reliance and BSNL??? If at all they do that... then who is going to care iphone!!! hahhhh!!!!!
by Raj from Osaka on 07/05/08 07:25 AM

Less than 15k ! You can forget about that price. Apple does not consider India an important market and does not price its products low to appeal to the budget buyer. Same as with the iphone. But if the iphone does come out at 28k, it will never be a big hit. If it comes at 20k, then there will definitely be a lot of sales for it.

ur right .we should take pledge that we will not buy iphone if the prices are more than that of us and not let others to buy.we should teach mnc's alesson that indians are not fool like soniya gandhi.

Its too early to say that the price is wrong for Iphone in india. coz its not develop in india. u can't compare indian market to US market. U know how much more u paying for a Honda CRV in India than US. Allmost 2times. How much you paying for sony PSP. allmost double. So why people buy it. are they fool. U should appreciate to vodaphone that is launching for us latest technology in our country.

what "latest technology".... ??? Iphone is cool but look at the price... i mean if this same thing was from some other maker... the hype wouldnt hv been ds much. Apple sells the drool factor in its products more than anything. And with vodafone bringing it means u cant make the full use of the phone with other networks... and soon when some other nu drool comes up u wont even get a proper resale value...just like high end cdma phones. Lets hope that with this vodaphone+apple combo the trend of locked gsms doesnt hit india... let the gsm section be free.

the author does not know what he is talking about. "iphone 2" will be launched in India with the prices nearly on par with the US prices. I know this because my company has worked with both these companies to bring this phone to india.

Iphone 2 will be coming in sep 2008 in US market, So probably all the old and refurbished Iphone gone be sold in Indian market.. Cool ... Easy way to make money with the scraps..... Good Idea.. that`s why they are in market.... :)

True! 'iPhone2' will be priced at $199 in the US and will be launched on the 11th of July. The price here will be almost similar to the US price. Though it'll be releasing on the 11th of July in the US, it'll hit the Indian market only during the first week of of September.

Launch in sept 08!!! Its too late!!! And the price of 8GB iphone is also too high!!! If iphone wants to capture market, it shoud launch much earlier bcoz there are lot of competitors coming with similar concept.

iPhone 2 will be launched around that time in the US....will they be selling the old left out stuff in Indian market just to clear their stocks???
by Varun from Delhi on 06/05/08 03:24 PM

True - I agree. By then you would have a 64 GB model launched in the US with GPS and integrated Office email, etc and we would be paying a premium for the initial 8 GB model. In a couple of months the prices would come down to realistic levels when apple realizes that it is cheaper to get the unlocked phone from the US and use it here on the Vodafone network...

india will definately see the iphone2. once the iphone is scrapped in the US, it will be scrapped worldwide. when apple introduces new ipods in the US, it upgrades their catalogue in india too within a couple of weeks. As far as 8gb goes, the iphone2 will still start at 8gb and mite go upto 32gb. there are also rumours of an iphone shuffle.. basically a stripped down version. also, the world might see the iphone2 being announced next month. what one can expect is 3g, 5mp camera, gps,etc.. also, the iphone2 will be soon tested on the austrian 3g tmobile network.

Hmm, I dont think that price for iPhone will same as in US. If you tally prices for iPods suffels (1GB ) price in india is RS 2700 and in US $49( RS. 2000).....so I think the prices for iPhone might be greater than the same in US. Thanks Ravi

Why this step motherly treatment? 8GB phone now is selling at 300$ the same will b available in India for 700$. too much yaar and what is the big idea in releasing 8 GB first make you spend 28,000 and after few moths coming with 16 GB to make you spend more. If there is no level playing Government should regulate these things

why will some one buy Apple I phone for such a phone when you can easily get HTC which is far more better than the I-phone. Its will be a waste of money. Though the phone looks sexy but its not woth buying for such an amount.. 18k at the most is fine.
